Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, Saturday condemned those individuals berating Adamawa state governor, Alhaji Murtala Nyako, for his memo to Northern governors accusing President Goodluck Jonathan of genocide against Northerners and called on the federal government to investigate the allegations thoroughly.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media Affairs, Malam Sani Umar, a copy of which was made available to THISDAY in Sokoto.
According to the statement, “those calling Nyako all sorts of names for writing the memo were doing so out of lack of understanding of the security situation in the region.”
The statement maintained that Nyako’s memo should not be dismissed with a wave of hand but should be thoroughly investigated with a view to ascertaining those behind the killing of innocent citizens in the North.
The statement dispelled insinuations that the APC governors did not back Nyako’s letter to Northern governors. It stated that such insinuations were meant to mislead the public and expose the APC governors to public odium.
“The truth of the matter is that the APC governors discussed in detail Nyako’s memo during their last meeting in Abuja, even before the meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa. So, it is not true that the APC governors did not support Nyako’s memo as being insinuated in some quarters,” the statement read.
To this end, it said concerted efforts should be made by the federal government to tackle the insurgency in the North-east. The statement therefore, urged the federal government to investigate Nyako’s memo with a view to curbing the ugly trend.
