Ebonyi workers task stakeholders on peace, unity
Workers in Ebonyi State have called on all stakeholders in the Nigeria project to as a matter of urgency, show greater commitment towards building enduring peace and unity in the country.
The organised labour also condemned the spate of killings, abduction, destruction of properties precipitated by the dastardly acts of the outlawed Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
In a joint addressed by the chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Joseph Nweke and Mr. Elias Oduma respectively, the unions lamented that victims of the Nyanya bomb blast which claimed about 80 lives last month were mostly workers, who had come to board buses to their respective offices.
Harping on the theme of the celebration 'Building peace and unity: Panacea for sustainable national development', the unionists said it was apt given the security challenges facing the country.
"Last year, health workers were killed in cold blood in Kano State while carrying out immunisation exercise against poliomyelitis. On April 14 about 80 Nigerians, most of whom were supposedly workers who had gone to board buses to their respective offices, lost their lives at Nyanya near Abuja in a bomb blast planted by the Boko Haram terrorist group," they said.
The unions also called on the state government to revisit the salary structure of the workers, stressing that "the present salary structure has uniform increment rate for all grade levels (GL.01-17)."
The state Governor, Chief Martin Elechi, in his address, called on all workers in the state to be more security conscious in their daily activities.
He said the call was expedient now that "the menace of terror coupled with its increasing diversity and sophistication have made it incumbent on all citizens to be alert at all times."
