THE Lagos State Government in her effort to achieving higher productivity and perfection in the service organised an induction programme to train its newly employed 1,775 teachers.
In the history of this administration, it is the first time, the government would be conducting a Unified Formal Induction Training for newly employed in the education sector. This demonstrated the state government’s commitment to the training of teachers to improve the teaching and learning in the schools.
Participants who are spread across the six Education Districts are grouped in batches to ease the induction programme held at the Public Service Staff Development Centre, Magodo. The Special Adviser on Eko Project, Ms Ronke Azees noted that the new teachers must be passionate without which according to her they cannot survive especially with the Teachers Competency Framework.
She reiterated that all attention was on them because of the huge government’s investment involved in their employment.
Mrs. Azees also advised that they should make friends with teachers mentors in their schools and they must take responsibility for their own learning by sponsoring themselves to conferences, workshops and consulting the internet, this according to her would expose them to great opportunities available in the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Teachers Establishment and Pensions Office (TEPO) Mr. Nurudeen Ojora-Adejiyan while welcoming the new entrants into the noble profession noted that the exercise “reinforces the government’ resolve to build competent teachers who will help to move the state forward in its bid to attain excellence”.
He further stated that “a total of 1,775 teachers of different subjects who were employed in 2013 must undergo a five-day -Induction Training to be conducted by PSSDC”
The Director General PSSDC, Mrs. Olubunmi Fabamwo while giving insight into the programme content listed: Teaching, a reputable profession, personal branding, history, structure and function of the state civil service, vision and mission. Presentation skills and classroom management, Public Service Rules among others as some of the courses.
At the end of the programme, according to Mrs. Fabamwo, participants must be able to situate Teaching as a reputable profession among recognised professions, and explain the vision and mission of Lagos state government with a view to use education as a tool for its realisation.
She therefore, enjoined the new teachers to be ready to add value to other people as according to her “Bricks, mortars and classrooms don’t teach, competent, discipline and dedicated teachers are the brains behind successful story in education development”.
She also mentioned that PSSDC had to work with academia through colleges of education and involve other stakeholders to facilitate learning in the course in other to achieve a robust learning.
The induction programme was commended by both the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) as they promised to support and work with the state to achieve effective performance and greater tomorrow. The induction programme which kicked of on Monday March 31st is expected to end on Friday May 2nd 2014.
