Senator Babafemi Ojudu represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District in the Senate on the plank of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this interview, he maintains that neither Mr. Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nor Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele of the Labour Party (LP) is a match for Governor Kayode Fayemi of the APC in the governorship elections in Ekiti State. Excerpts:
How optimistic are you that the outcome of the polls will be in your party’s favour?
We have no doubt that the outcome of the election will be in our favour. The governor has worked hard to bring about positive change in the state. It is what everyone can see, touch and feel.
There is no government since 1990 that has done that much for the people of Ekiti. In appreciation of his hard work, his sense of purpose and his commitment to the development of the state, he will be rewarded with another term.
Ekiti State has been known to be a volatile state during elections, what do you think is responsible for this? How can electoral violence be stemmed?
Ekiti people are principled not violent. Ekiti people are conscious of their right and will not allow anyone to take or subtract from it.
It is when people try to prevent them to give free expression to their democratic rights that they come out to say no. It is the crooks, the undemocratic elements and the bandits who attempt stealing their votes that are violent and not the Ekiti people.
Do you see the LP and PDP candidates as a match for Fayemi?
Obviously not! Comparing them to Fayemi is like comparing death and sleep. The difference is clear.
How do you see the emergence of Mr. Ayo Fayose as the PDP flag bearer?
Interesting and God sent. We were looking forward to a robust contest. With Fayose it is no contest.
Considering the irregularities in recent elections conducted by INEC, do you see the commission conducting a credible election come June 21?
It is not about the commission. We cannot decide for them what they will do. It is for us to ensure they do what is right. Preparation, organisation, meticulousness and vigilance are our watch words.
