The Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, Sunday in Makurdi said the military operation in Benue and Nasarawa States, where suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed scores of people, was yielding good result.
But he added that the military would continue to assess the success of the operation in order to make adjustments, where necessary.
He spoke just as Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura, called on the military to review its operation in the state, following Thursday’s killing of herdsmen in Keana Local Government Area.
Olukolade has however assured the people of the readiness of the military to probe the killing of the herdsmen.
He said: “At the moment, we cannot say we know anything about what happened until the matter is fully investigated and the true picture of what actually happened is known.
“Let’s be sure of the narration of the people who are recounting what happened, the matter will be thoroughly investigated by the military, I can assure you that.
“The point however is that the incident in certainly not in line with the pattern of our operation, it s not in consonance with our modus operandi. But we will investigate it to know what happened and how come.
“At the moment, we certainly cannot say we know anything about it unless it qualifies as a gathering of an armed gang. But those on ground should be able to give us an insight.
“The essence of our operation in the North-central is to end and apprehend the operation of all terror groups and armed gangs marauding within the area.
“The mission is not targeted at any individual, organisation or ethnic group. But if anyone belongs to an armed gang, he has every reason and cause to be afraid unless he drops his arms.â€
On his part, Al-Makura during an assessment tour of the area where scores of Fulani herdsmen were attack during a burial ceremony, described the incident as a misplaced priority by the military.
He added that the attack on the residents while performing a funeral ceremony was totally out of place and promised to take up the matter with the appropriate level and ensure justice is done.
