jonathan_goodluck_thumbLAGOS (Codewit News Agency) – Nigeria’s main opposition party on Sunday urged newly-installed President Goodluck Jonathan to fight corruption, embark on electoral reform and set performance targets for his administration.

“While he is free to set his own priorities, key areas where he can score quick wins are electoral reform, power and the fight against corruption,” the Action Congress (AC) said in a statement.

“Jonathan must have a roadmap and set realistic objectives for his administration, in addition to introducing benchmarks as part of a monitoring mechanism for his ministers,” it said.

Jonathan, 52, who was inaugurated on Thursday following the death, the previous day, of president Umaru Yar’Adua, has promised to fight corruption and reform the electoral system in a country with a history of graft and electoral fraud.

“The fight against corruption must be total and unambiguous,” despite Jonathan’s short tenure, which is scheduled to end in May next year after elections, it said.

Nigeria, Africa’s second largest economy last year missed its target of providing 6,000 megawatts of electricity to its 150 million population.

It currently produces around 3,000 megawatts.

The usually critical AC said that despite the shortness of his administration, Jonathan “can help put Nigeria on the path to greatness”.

“The only obstacle between him and greatness is none other than himself. He has no reason to fail,” it added
