What would have resulted in a major tragedy was yesterday averted by the men of the police force who promptly detonated a high calibre Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) packaged in a polythene bag and dropped by a commercial motorcyclist at the ever busy Sultan by Kashim Road in the Kaduna metropolis.
The spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, Aminu Lawan, a Superintendent of Police (SP), who confirmed the incident, said there was a distressed call from people of the area that a suspected polythene bag containing a questionable substance was dropped by a moving motorcyclist and the police anti-bomb squad team was quickly deployed to the area.
Lawan said: “The area was immediately condoned off when it was discovered that the polythene bag contained high calibre IEDs, and our anti-bomb squad were able to successfully detonate the IEDs and the area was immediately brought under control.
“As I speak to you now, the area is calm and people are already going about their normal activities, meanwhile effort to apprehend the suspect is on top gear.â€
He also said men of the surveillance and CID personnel were already monitoring movements of persons with questionable characters within the area, but advised that people should be more vigilant.
There was pandemonium in the area as people hurriedly closed their shops, while vehicles also took to alternative routes.
Several other vehicles ran into each other in an attempt to escape causing traffic, which lasted for a few hours before the situation was brought under control.
An eye witness at the scene of the incident said efforts were made to apprehend the suspect who dropped the polythene bag containing the IEDs but by the time it was discovered, the man had gone far.
“We tried to see if we could catch up with the him that dropped it but he had ran far and we could not catch up with him, it was then we called the police and it was discovered that it was an IEDs that was contained in the polythene bag,†he said.
