Nat’l Conference Will Build a New Nigeria, Says S’East PDP

The National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South-east zone, Col Austin Akobundu (rtd), yesterday appealed to Nigerians to exploit the opportunity being offered by the National Conference to proffer better path to attain the country’s national goals.
 
Akobundu, in a statement issued yesterday in Enugu, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for assembling cream of professionals, civil society organisations, politicians, academics representing various interests, states and geo-political groups as well as women and youths to chat a better way for Nigeria’s economic, political and social direction through the national conference.
 
“It is my conviction that Nigeria will come out better after the conference considering the quality of men and women selected to chat the onerous task of designing a new feature for our nation at the conference. It is historic because it is coming at the 100th year of Nigeria’s formation via the amalgamation of Northern and Southern protectorate.
 
“I also commend South-east states for choosing men and women of credible characters to represent the zone at the conference. Considering their antecedents and pedigree, I’m optimistic that they will make remarkable contributions that will uplift the zone,” he said.  
Similarly, the PDP boss in the zone condoled with the families of those who lost their love ones during last Saturday’s recruitment exercise by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
 
He described the death of those who went for the recruitment exercise as unfortunate, and challenged the NIS to put in place necessary measures that will forestall such occurrences in the future.
 
Meanwhile, Akobundu has extolled South-east governors for electing Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State as the new Chairman, South-east Governors’ Forum (SEGF), even as he described the him as a consummate politician worthy of trust to pilot the affairs of the geo-political zone at a time Ndigbo need a focused, reliable, people-oriented and result-driven character to pilot their affairs to the next political space.
 
Akobundu used the opportunity to commend other PDP governors in the zone for their developmental strides as well as the provision of the dividends of democracy in their respective states; accomplishments which he said have endeared PDP to the people. He stressed that with the performance of PDP governors in the zone, the party remains the party to beat in 2015 polls.
