NIGERIA: Kidnappers of Baraje’s Son Bag 22-year Jail Term

An Ilorin High Court last Friday sentenced two kidnappers, Ajadi Oba AbdulRasheed and Ayeni Abayomi, to 22 years imprisonment for conspiracy, kidnapping, extortion and armed robbery.
 
The accused persons were charged for conspiring to kidnap Abiodun Abdulkadir Baraje, son of the former acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje.
 
The offences were contrary to Section 97 of the Penal Code.
While AbdulRasheed was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment on the first and second charges, and fined N100,000, Ayeni Abayomi bagged 10 years on the first and second charges and was equally fined N100,000.
 
The jail terms are to run concurrently commencing from the day the judgment was delivered.   
 
Delivering judgment in the case, the trial judge,  Justice Mahmud AbdulGafar, found the accused persons guilty of conspiring to kidnap Abdulkadir Baraje.
 
Justice AbdulGafar disclosed further that the first and second accused persons were guilty of conspiracy, and extorting the sum of $100,000 from Bilikis Baraje (wife of Biodun Baraje) by threatening that her husband, Biodun Baraje, would be killed if the said sum was not paid.
 
The said offence was committed on February 4, 2010 at Success and Regards Filling Station, along Asa Dam Road, Ilorin where the accused persons kidnapped Abdulkadir Baraje.
