UMUAHIA â€” A hostel housing 119 students of Federal Governmentâ€™s College, Umuahia, Abia State, was gutted by fire Sunday night, destroying property worth millions of Naira.
However, no life was lost as the students were out of the hostel observing their evening devotion when the incident happened.
This is about the third time fire would occur in the school, prompting observers to suspect sabotage.
On account of this Abia State government has promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, with a view to tracing the cause and warned any act of sabotage would be severely dealt with.
Governor Theodore Orji, who gave the pledge when he visited school to assess the level of damage caused by the fire on Monday, recalled that this was not the first time fire would occur in the school in recent times and assured that it would be the last.
Sympathising with the students, who lost their belongings in the inferno, Orji donated N2 million to the principal of the school to help the affected students replace lost items.
The governor said it was his primary responsibility to provide security to the students and thanked God that no life was lost in the incident.
He described the school as a great one which had recorded many achievements in academics and in other areas, saying he was proud of the institution.
Conducting the governor round the affected hostel, Acting Principal of the school, Dr. Earnest Chukwuka explained that the fire started while the students were in the classroom for night prep.
