Unknown gunmen yesterday abducted a politician at his residence in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The politician, Alhaji Samaila Ahmed, was a former House of Representatives member who represented Darazo Constituency from 2007 to 2011.
It was gathered that Ahmed was aspiring to contest for the Senate to represent Bauchi Central senatorial district on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015.
According to a source in Darazo, the gunmen were hiding in a bush within the town for many days in order to monitor the movement of their victim before they finally succeeded in carrying out the operation.
â€œThe people in the area noticed the presence of the gunmen inside the bush before the abduction, and alerted the police but unfortunately no action was taken by security operatives,â€ the source said.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), DSP Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident saying it occurred around 2 a.m. yesterday.
â€œWe received a report from Darazo Divisional Police station that about 10 gunmen in security outfit stormed the residence of the politician and abducted him,â€ he stated, adding that police had mapped out strategies to arrest the suspected abductors.
In a similar development, the state police command has foiled assassination attempt on the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Shira Local Government Area of the state.
The PPRO, who confirmed the development to journalists in his office, said there was an attempt to assassinate the PDP chairman but fortunately it failed
He said two suspects have been arrested in connection with the assassination attempt while three AK47 and ammunition were recovered from them.
