How my son ended up in Kirikiri prison — Woman

LAGOS — Mother  of a 200-level student of Lagos City College, charged for robbery before a Lagos High Court in Igbosere, Mrs Olanrewaju Idowu, yesterday, explained how she sent her son on an errand but met him in Kirikiri Prison.

Idowu, who was led in evidence by her son’s lawyer, Mrs F. Jegede, told the court that on September 9, she sent Lekan to Lagos to buy some provisions for her shop.

She said: “At the place where my son (Olalekan) went to buy things, there was a riot and police at Adeniyi Adele raided the place.

“The following day, I checked Lion Building and saw my son. When I asked him what happened, he said the police dragged him inside a danfo on his way to purchase what I sent him.

“I asked my son of the N20,000 I gave him to buy provisions for me, and he said one of the police officers had collected it.

“The following day, they took my son to SARS and then to a magistrate court. From there, he was taken to Kirikiri and has been there since 2008.”

Olalekan, alongside Kabiru Olanrewaju and Tajudeen Busari were said to have on September 9, 2008 at 76, Lewis Street, Lagos Island, while armed with a gun, robbed one Ajibola Ajieigbe of N20,000 and a set of gold jewellery valued at N150,000.

The prosecutor, Mrs Akin Adesomju, informed the court that the offence is contrary to Section 402 (2) (a) of the Criminal Code Law Cap C17 Vol 2, Laws of Lagos State 2003. However, the defendants pleaded not guilty.

After listening to counsel in the matter, the presiding judge, Justice Ebenezer Adebajo, adjourned the case to February 4.
