Following recent happenings and tension in the country ahead the 2015 general elections, a group, the Nigerian Professionals for Good Governance (NPGG) has warned that over-heating of the polity by politicians would derail and strain the current economic growth being witnessed in the country. In their maiden conference in Abuja, the group contended recent trends in Rivers, Ogun, Ekiti, and Enugu States have the potential of retracting concerted efforts that have helped spurNigeria’s economic growth. Chairman of NPGG, Diepiribo Briggs, told journalists that all professionals and technocrats have the duty to protect the nation’s economy from being battered by the antics and activities of politicians ahead of the 2015 polls. According to Briggs, “as the 2015 approaches, we call on all stakeholders and professionals in the Nigerian project, regardless of political, ethnic or religious persuasion to immediately come together to diffuse the present political tension in the country as it has the potentials to derail and strain the present economic growth going on in the country.” He further maintained that it is the duty of “professionals to rise up against those heating up the polity for their selfish interest, especially the reckless and unguarded statements and sentiments being promoted politicians.” “Professionals are the bastion of our economy and the fulcrum upon which nationhood hinges and they should be the ones demanding accountability from politicians but not the other round,” Briggs stressed. Meanwhile, the National Legal Adviser of the group, Mr. George Ekpungu, told THISDAY that the consequence of creating tension in the polity is severe as it will discourage further investment in the country, a situation, he said would negatively affect the economic growth indexes.
