Despite the controversy trailing the conduct of the just concluded local council elections in Anambra State, the state chapter of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has hailed the exercise, describing it as free, fair and transparent.

Briefing journalists in Awka after its executive meeting yesterday, the body commended Governor Peter Obi for taking a bold step in conducting the elections after 16 years.

Speaking through its state Chairperson, Mrs. Oby Okafor, CNPP said unlike what obtained in other states, the state Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) provided a level-playing ground that enabled a credible election to take place in the 20 local councils where election was concluded.

She pointed out that while the ruling parties won all the seats as was the case in some states, different political parties secured victory in various parts of the state, a development that showed equal playing grounds for all stakeholders.

Okafor enjoined the candidates of other political parties to use their positions in their councils to promote healthy debate and inputs that would help entrench good governance, while urging the newly elected council chairmen to be fair and just in the conduct of the business of governance in order to achieve the goals of even distribution of democracy dividends to the electorate.

While calling on the aggrieved political parties and individuals,  who have grievances over the exercise to tow the line of civility and channel their grievances to appropriate quarters, Okafor called on ANSIEC to ensure that the rescheduled Nnewi North council election that was declared inconclusive would be transparent, free and fair.

Earlier in his opening remark, the CNPP state Secretary, Mr. Peter Okala, said with the successful conduct of the election, Obi had broken the 16-year-old jinx of the inability of successive governments to conduct local council elections in the state.
