Chairman, Technical Commission of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Dr. Daniel Igali has said that preparations toward the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland have already begun, giving indication that Nigeria would do well at the mini Olympic Games.
Dr Igali in a recent chat with Sunday Vanguard Sports, said all the sports representing the country at the Games have started preparations for the Commonwealth Games with the series of competitions they have been organising and attending in recent time.
He said the Gov Dickson Wrestling Classic as well as the ones held in Warri (Chief EK Clark) and the Commonwealth Wrestling championship in Johannesburg, South Africa also held last December were part of the Games’ preparation.
The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland starts from July 22 to August 3, 2014.
” One thing that we need to understand is that this is Commonwealth Games preparation. The Games preparations have begun long ago with the Gov Seriake Dickson Wrestling Classic and all other competitions that we have been attending. What we had in Warri was Commonwealth Games preparation, what we had in South Africa was also Commonwealth Games preparation.
What we had in Oghara and Warri in Delta State were Commonwealth Games preparation in Athletics, what Judo had in Ibadan was Commonwealth Games preparation.
I think with regards to Nigeria, different sports have started preparation for the Commonwealth Games. About six weeks ago we had a boxing tournament which was also part of the preparation for the Commonwealth Games. To say this is the type of medals that we’ll win, would depend on how each of the sports has performed over the past years,”Igali stressed.
