The wives of the Governors of Benue, Gombe, Katsina, Ogun, Akwa Ibom and Abia states have been nominated for the Most Valuable Governors’ Wives Awards (MVGWA) for their contributions to grassroots development through their various projects as first ladies.

The MVGWA Team, in a statement issued by its leader, Mr. Tom Obulu, said all 36 Governors’ wives were assessed based on their NGO projects available in the public domain and their impacts on the people.

“Thereafter, thirteen governors’ wives shortlisted came from votes cast by the people on the internet over couple of months. The MVGWA Team shortlisted six for emerging recipients for the year 2012/2013. The criteria adopted were sustainability, empowerment, impact, change agent and corporate branding,” he said.

Abia State Governor’s Wife, Mrs. Mercy Orji, was nominated for the impact created by her family Empowerment Programme while her Benue counterpart, Mrs. Yemisi Suswan was nominated for her SEV-AV Foundation.

Akwa Ibom Governor’s Wife, Mrs. Ekaette Akpabio, is being honoured for the work done through her Family Life Enhancement Initiative alongside her Katsina counterpart, Hajia Fatima Shema for her Service to Humanity Foundation. The women would receive their awards at a ceremony themed ‘Grassroots Transformation in Nigeria: The Roles of Governors’ Wives NGOs as Champions’ to be held in February 2014, in Abuja. “The MVGWA is design to lead a new phenomenon in the assessment and recognition of the governors’ wives who are providing complementary achievements to the governors’ achievements,” the statement added.
