The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloma Muktar, has been advised to always resist all the temptations that could further jeopardise the image of the judiciary and her quest for a better judicial system in the country.
A former President of Court Appeal, Justice Mustapha Akanbi (rtd), stated this in Ilorin yesterday, when the CJN along with other justices of the Supreme Court paid him a condolence visit over the death of his wife, which occurred recently.
Akanbi, who is also the pioneer Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), described the visit of the CJN and her team as the climax of the condolence greetings he had received, adding that: “Despite the fact that things had gone bad in the Nigerian judiciary before now, Justice Aloma Mukhtar is doing a lot to reposition it.
Justice Akanbi said: “But I want to live to see the Nigeria judiciary as the pride of our nation” maintaining that serving judges across the country should endeavour to move with commitment and always compliment the efforts of the CJN.”
He, however, disclosed that among all the retired judicial officers, he remained the only talkative, stating that: “I cannot be indifferent with events as they going on across the nation until Nigeria is better.”
Meanwhile, the CJN had earlier described the late wife of the retired jurist as a sister and a woman of great virtue, stressing that: “During her lifetime, she loved seeing people and always on the lookout to doing good things.
“Although, it is sad that she left at the time when Justice Akanbi needed her most in his life because of old age, but it is also heartening that she lived a fulfilled live," she said.
The CJN added: "Death is certain and everybody’s period as destined by God shall surely come one day. It is the only thing everybody will keep on waiting for.”
She also described Justice Akanbi as disciplinarian whose tutelage had remain a landmark legacy for all judges to emulate even as she pledged her continuous relationship and supports to the Akanbi’s family and prayed God to grant her soul in paradise.
