The Irony of Politics

Olusegun ObasanjoAnother indicator that this period in the life of the nation is interesting is the turn at which the once rosy relationship between former president Olusegun Obasanjo and his now estranged political godson, President Goodluck Jonathan, has assumed. It has completely gone awry!

For an Obasanjo who did everything to ensure Jonathan became governor after the plan to send the former Bayelsa State governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, to jail had been perfected; Obasanjo who allegedly ditched his own core men to make him vice president; intervened in the succession crisis that made him acting president and campaigned round to eventually make him a substantive president with his own election in 2011, is a case study for an intelligent political science class.

In another breath, it was the same Obsanjo who prevented Governor Rotimi Amaechi from realising his dream as the Rivers State Governor in 2007, dismissing his ambition as having K-leg, whereas God had a different plan for Amaechi and the Rivers people.

Today, in an irony of fate and an interesting turn of events, while Jonathan and Obasanjo may never genuinely have anything to do with each other again going by Obasanjo’s recent caustic letter that was further leaked to the public, the duo of the former president and Amaechi have found reason to relate, more so in a filial sense. That is politics. Don’t rule out anything for as long as you know the rule- that only interest is permanent and not those stereotyped moments shared in deceit.
