PORT HARCOURT—Senator representing Rivers South-East senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe, has described the state police command’s denial of access for resumed sitting by lawmakers in the state House of Assembly, RVHA, as a deliberate injustice against Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Speaking at the inauguration of emergent Save Rivers Movement, SRM, at Eleme, Abe alleged that the police disposition to Rivers Assembly’s resumption was an act in further submission to the wishes of those who controlled the levers of power, stressing that as the compelling reasons Amaechi and his supporters defected to the All progressives Congress, APC.

He said:  “Court asked that the House of Assembly should reconvene. The 25 members went to the House to resume sitting but they were not allowed to go into the Assembly, against the court order, because they know that the 25 lawmakers loyal to Governor Amaechi are in the majority. What sort of justice can that system of policing be attributed to?

“They have taken our oil wells at Soku; they have stopped the Port Harcourt water project originally initiated by the Federal Government in conjunction with the African Development Bank. Can you compare the Port Harcourt International Airport to any other in Nigeria?

“I don’t think we deserve this sort of treatment after Rivers State gave two million votes to President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The problem of Rivers State is not coming from any Minister or Supervisory Minister. Our problem is not coming from even the Minister of Police Affairs. Rivers State has been singled out for persecution, intimidation and monumental injustice by those who control the levers of power.”

Abe, who chairs the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream, said he wholeheartedly identified with those who formed the Save Rivers Movement.

“I share your vision; I admire your mission; I share your dreams and I believe in your struggle to protect and secure the future of Rivers State,” he added.

He called on President Goodluck Jonathan to act and be seen as President of Nigeria and not the President of Bayelsa or only a President for the Ijaw.

Governor Amaechi was represented at the event by his Deputy, Tele Ikuru, who restated that Amaechi did all he could to move the PDP forward but did not succeed because the party was like a car whose engine had malfunctioned.”
