Faced with a rising death toll of its members in the wake of the ongoing anti-terrorism expedition by the military, the outlawed Boko Haram sect has resorted to forcing people to join its fold, it was learnt Wednesday.
The military said yesterday that the sect had taken that path of conscripting young people into its fold following the deadly attacks by troops in the last few days at the Sambisa forest and other camps where members of the sects lost hundreds of fighters.
Spokesman of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Col Muhammadu Dole, told journalists in Maiduguri that the terrorists were now moving around villages and other highways to abduct and forcibly recruit innocent people to replace those killed by troops.
The insurgents, also for the second time in 72 hours, yesterday attacked travellers on the Maiduguri-Biu highway, and killed nine of them.
The Borno highways have become the slaughter slab of the notorious sect in recent times as scores of passengers have been waylaid and killed.
Last Monday, some travellers were attacked on the same road while three drivers were abducted by the insurgents, after burning their two vehicles loaded with oranges.
The most notorious of the highways is the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu Road, which records daily attack on motorists by the militia group
It was gathered yesterday that many motorists had to make an urgent U-turn when the sect seized control of the now notorious Maiduguri- Damboa- Biu Road.
Some of those compelled to make a forced retreat, told journalists in Maiduguri that the bodies of nine passengers were seen on the highway with their throats slashed.
According to them, the insurgents attacked a passenger bus and a car close to Bulabulin Ngaura village in Damboa Local Government Area.
It was also gathered that some supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who were on their way back to Biu after a political engagement in Maiduguri, were forced to return to turn back following the attack.
One of them said: "The road today (yesterday) is not good; we have to turn back because we saw and counted nine dead bodies and there was nobody around there. So, we were afraid to continue our journey to Biu and so we had to quickly make a U-turn"
