The Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Unaru Tanko Almakura, yesterday described Chief Solomon Lar, the former Governor of Old Plateau State and Former Chairman of the People Democratic Party (PDP), as a leader of great reputation who reformed the then old Plateau State.

Almakura made the comment during Lar’s laying-in-state in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State.
According to Almakura, the people of Nasarawa State hold Lar in high esteem and shall remain grateful to him.
"Let me point out that we hold our beloved Lar in high esteem. There is no doubt that the people shall remain grateful to him for the enormous benefits of his emancipation programme when he was the governor of the then Plateau State.
“The footprints of his administration, which are still very glaring today,

will remain indelible as they serve as landmarks, road map and guide for leaders coming after him to emulate,” he said.
Almakura said the road networks, clinics, cottage hospitals and water projects that Lar’s administration executed speak volumes about his commitment and concern for rural development and elevation of the living standard of the less-privileged in the society.

According to him, "Of more importance was his campaign of raising the status of the hitherto forgotten communities as seen in the creation of Chiefdoms for the indigenous minority tribes as well as the upgrading of the status of many traditional stools. Many of our chiefs, some of whom are seated here today, are beneficiaries of the late Lar’s administration."

Lar, he said, stood for truth and justice, adding that he gallantly fought in the G-8, G-34 and G-18 among other groups for the restoration of democratic rule, national cohesion, reconciliation and stability over the years. "The result of the struggle by the groups in which our icon played prominent roles at various times is the democratic rule we have been enjoying since,” he added.

The body of the late governor after lying-in-state at the government house in Lafia was later moved to Plateau State yesterday.
