The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) Wednesday disclosed that arrangements had be put in place to conduct local government elections on December 28.

The commission said it had attained 95 per cent readiness for the election and that it would go on without any drawback.
Briefing journalists on the level of preparations so far, the chairman of the commission, Mohammed Jauro Abdu, disclosed all that was required for the elections had been provided by the state government as both the sensitive and the non-sensitive materials are ready

He said the screening of candidates into the offices of the chairmen, vice-chairmen and councillors had been concluded pointing out that 10 political parties were participating in the election.

On the non-participation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in election, the chairman said the party has not inform the commission of its intention but that the party did not obtained any of the forms which would have indicated its intention of contesting in the elections.

Abdu said: “The party was part of the stakeholders’ meeting which resolved to hold the election on December 28 and if they decides to back out of it, it’s entirely their problem as the commission will not force any political party to participate in the election."

The PDP Chairman in the state, Alhaji Lawan Gana Karasuwa, who was out of town at press time told journalists on phone that the party was boycotting the election on the basis that the state was under emergency rule and all constitutional rights in the state are suspended.

But the SIEC chairman said the emergency rule in operation in the state did not affects democratic structures hence the commission will go ahead with the elections.

He called on well-meaning people of the state to come out en masse to elect the candidates of their choice during the elections and promised that security agents would perform their civic responsibility by ensuring that law and order are maintained during the exercise.

The coalition of political parties in the state had last week hailed the level of preparations exhibited by the state electoral commission ahead of the elections and enjoined the body to sustain the neutrality shown so far.
