CNPP Asks INEC to Apologise over Flawed Votersâ€™ Register

The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has asked the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, to tender an unreserved apology to Nigerians for under performing and producing less than perfect voters’ register.

The group in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, expressed dismay that rather than "honourably apologising for the flawed, mangled and dubious voters’ register, Jega at the quarterly meeting with political parties in Abuja, heaped insult on the sensibilities of Nigerians."

CNPP further said after wasting over N80 billion on the voters’ registration exercise, Jega should be apologetic, remorseful, introspective and circumspect for under performing and producing less than perfect voters’ register.

"Rather he climbed the high horse and had the temerity to affirm and rationalise in his own admission that a less than perfect document has requisite integrity and compares favourably with any register of voters on our continent.

"Which African country is he comparing our mangled voters’ register with? Certainly, we hope the eminent professor must not in his delusion be comparing our mangled voters’ register with that of Ghana, Senegal, Benin Republic, Ruanda, South Africa and other beacons of democracy in Africa.

"We are at a loss when people like Jega will come to the reality that either a vital document like voters’ register is clean or tainted? Secondly, that Africa is not waiting for Nigeria to wake up from its deep slumber,” he said.

CNPP maintained its position that Jega must have to go in order to save the country's democracy, adding that he has shown that he cannot conduct a credible elections in 2015.
