The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)   yesterday affirmed its support for President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, saying it is not following the state Governor, Alhaji  Aliyu Wamakko to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing party supporters in  Sokoto yesterday, former Minister of Communications, Alhaji Muhammad Arzika Tambuwal, said the leadership of the party  in the state was solidly behind Jonathan and Tukur, despite the recent defection of Wamakko to the APC.

He said the PDP was not perturbed by the recent defection of Wamakko to APC, stressing that such development would not affect the fortunes of the party in 2015.

"We want to state categorically and unequivocally that we are bonafide members of the PDP. We reaffirm our unflinching support and affirm our complete faith in President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of Tukur.

"As you are aware, in 1998, PDP won 16 out of the 23 local government councils in the state. So, we are not worried that Wamakko has defected to APC," he added.

Tambuwal explained that all other opposition parties had withered away while the PDP survived various crises since 1999 because of its vision and national spread.

According to him, many personalities who left PDP in the past had returned to the party and as such Wamakko's defection to APC was of no effect whatsoever.

"We have analysed the wisdom of moving to another party. We recall that APC emerged out of the sickness and demise of APP to CPC and finally APC. Similarly, AD became AC, then ACN and finally merged into APC. It is obvious that PDP survived all this while because it has spread and the capacity to do so.

"Up till now, our founding fathers like former President   Olusegun Obasanjo, former military president, Gen.  Ibrahim Babangida and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar are still within PDP. So, we assure our members of our determination to reposition the party and all loyal members should remain steadfast.

"We remain grateful for the opportunities given to us under the platform of PDP and are committed to working for the party towards improving living conditions of all Nigerians," Tambuwal added.

Tukur's  Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Senator Abubakar Umar Gada, stated that the battle ahead was challenging but surmountable.
He urged party supporters to remain calm and persevere
