The New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a foremost Nigerian patriot and hero of democracy worth celebrating in his lifetime.

In a birthday message to Atiku, who turned 67 on Monday, New PDP in a statement by Eze Chukwuemeka Eze the spokesman of the “nPDP” observed that “although Nigeria is usually said not to have heroes, people like Atiku who have sacrificed a lot for the oneness and development of the country deserve to be celebrated and held up as models for the younger generation.

The party, which is presently finalizing a merger deal with the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) expected to be signed on 3rd December, 2013 thereby formalizing the merger deal between the two parties, eulogized Atiku as a man who by overcoming monumental barriers from his childhood to reach his present lofty position as an “astute public servant, a political iroko, business guru and eminent philanthropist”.

New PDP praised Atiku for the pivotal role he played in the formation of the party, saying: “History will never forget that epochal day when Atiku called the bluff of the crumbling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and led out his loyalists, including the G7 group of Governors, to form the New PDP, which in merging with the APC offers a new vista of hope for democracy in Nigeria.”

The party said it was a sweet coincidence that the APC-nPDP merger deal was sealed and announced on the heels of Atiku’s 67th birthday.

New PDP wished the former Vice President a happy birthday and many more years of life and good health to enable him continue to impact positively on Nigeria’s economic and political future
