Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Barrister Olivia Dazyem and the Chief  Executive Officer (CEO) of Abuja-based People and Passion Consults, Hajia Amina Salihu have urged governments, religious leaders and other stakeholders to recognise the rights of women in the country.
Both gave the charge while speaking at the 3rd Plateau Roundtable Forum organised by Care Fronting Nigeria in Jos at the week end with the topic. ”The rights of women in a religious society; focusing on Nigeria.”
According to the commissioner, any society that does not pay attention to the issues of women and girls is bound to be underdeveloped.
The commissioner noted that Christian and Islamic religions acknowledge the rights of women but however regretted that such rights have often been misinterpreted and sometimes abused thereby exposing the womenfolk to all forms of violence, discrimination and deprivation.
She stressed that God has deposited great potentials in women and as such the need for them to be allowed to contribute their own quota for the development of the society and the country at large.
In her submission, the Chief Executive Officer of the People and Passion Consult further stressed that human rights are inalienable, indivisible which cannot be transferred.
According to her, the aspiration of Islam is no different from that of a just state which wants the greater good and happiness for all including women.
While listing the rights of women to include the right of choice, education, dignity and honour, voice and participation in public life, property, religion and worship, life among others, he maintained that there was the need for the men folks to respect these rights in the interest of justice.
