Rivers State Government has denied allegations of inciting staff of the Rivers state judiciary to embark on an indefinite strike to stall judgment in the suit instituted against the government by the suspended elected officers of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council. The government was reacting to allegations by the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Amaechi had resorted to inciting staff of the state judiciary to go on an indefinite strike to hinder the state high Court from delivering judgment on the Obio/Akpor matter since he failed to get judgment from the Court of Appeal. Speaking yesterday on a radio programme monitored in Port Harcourt, Amaechi said he had no reason to resort to calling staff of the judiciary to embark on strike since he has confidence on the judiciary.
He said it would also be belittling his office to resort to such measures, adding that before any union resort to strike, it has a minimum number of days to inform the government of its intentions before embarking on the exercise.
Also amplifying the governor’s stance, the State attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Mr. Worgu Boms, while briefing press in Port Harcourt yesterday said those making the allegations were only trying to drag the judiciary into the political crisis in the state.
He said the judiciary was a different arm of government from the executive, insisting that it would be absurd for the government to dictate to the judiciary.
“As a government, we felt that we should inform the public that the judiciary is a separate and independent arm of the executive. All those statements are clearly geared towards politicising the judiciary, and undermining its position in the state,” Boms said.
He accused the PDP leadership in the state of giving the impression that they already knew the judgment before it would be delivered.
He said, “Those statements imply that they already know or have the judgement to be delivered. That is the meaning of what they are saying. We must tell all of you to note that the High Court adjourned for ruling and judgment; so what they are saying is that those rulings will be dismissed and judgement will be given.
