The Senate has mandated its Committee on Police Affairs to probe how the police have been accessing N140 billion from the Police Reform Fund from 2010 to 2013.

The decision was taken amid calls for the establishment of state police by senators during a debate yesterday on a motion on police finances.

The motion was sponsored by   Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs,  Senator Abubakar Tutare (PDP, Taraba, Central), who expressed concern over the utilisation of the initial takeoff grant of N78 billion and all the  additional monies the federal government appropriated in 2011, 2012 and 2013 budgets for police reform.

He said due to the plan to make the police more efficient, N78 billion, and N25 billion were provided for the agency in 2011, N15 billion in 2012 and N22 billion in 2013.

During the debate on the motion, senators spoke on the merits and demerits of state police with a lot saying that the extant centralised police system has not helped the security situation in the country.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, noted that the security situation in Yobe, Adamawa and Borno States would probably not have escalated if Nigeria had a decentralised police system.
Even Senate President David Mark, who said he had initially balked at the idea of a state police force, said he had changed his mind due to the way the police were now discharging their duties.
