Governor Adams OshiomholeThe fifth year anniversary celebration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State Wednesday came under fire as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state described it “as self aggrandisement because nothing worthy of celebration has been accomplished in the state.”

The party also alleged that between November 2008 and May 2013, the administration of Oshiomhole had received about N400 billion, collected loans worth several billions of naira but had not been able to justify the monies with developmental projects in the state.

The state Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, who stated this at a media briefing, said: “The Oshiomhole administration has collected over N400 billion since 2008. This is apart from the N33.4 billion he has collected in five years as the cost of running government, and N19 billion as security votes alone.

“What is on ground to show for all these monies? Oshiomhole has spent N47 billion on drainages alone. He also went to the capital market to raise money for the Benin-City Storm Water project. However, it is difficult to move from one point to another anytime it rains in the state. The roads are in terrible shapes, lives and properties are daily lost to flood in the state".

Orbih, who pointed out that while N136.7 billion was spent on road project in the state in the last one year, “it is surprising that Oshiomhole has inaugurated roads less than 200 metres.”

While listing the policies used by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to impoverish the people as poor healthcare provision, conduct of flawed local government election, oppressive tax policies, ban on motorcycle without recourse to an alternative transport system and a non-performing budget among others, he stressed that the standard of living in the state had not improved since Oshiomhole became governor.

The PDP chairman also accused the state government of dragging the judiciary in the state into  partisan politics, saying the presence of the Chief Justice of the state at the inauguration of the APC was condemnable.

Reacting to PDP allegations, the state government said it was not surprised that the party was not happy when the good people of the state and all lovers of democracy celebrate the fifth anniversary of Oshiomhole’s administration.

In a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Loius Odion, said: “When there is rejoicing of angels and the faithful, the devil is left to gnash its deformed teeth in impotent jealousy in the pit of hell. I don’t know where the PDP got their figures. It is on record that we got only N25billion bond in the last three years for various capital projects, one of which is the Benin-City Master Water Storm Project. So far, we have paid back more than half of the money.”

He said even though the drainage projects have not been completed, the residents of Benin-City are already enjoying the benefit as flooding has now become history in the Ugbowo axis, Teachers’ House, Five Junction, Mission Road axis and other quarters. "The people are happy but the PDP is sad," he said.

According to him, “Talking about bankruptcy, I think it is a case of the pot calling kettle black. It is the PDP federal government that is unable to fund the Federation Account. For the first time in our history the federal government under PDP watch cannot pay states their statutory entitlements. But through prudent management,  Oshiomhole has continued to pay workers and meet his obligations to contractors as and when due. So, who is broke? You can see that the PDP is merely hallucinating.

“We enjoin the good people of the state to continue their victory dance and ignore the latest tissues of lies by the PDP. As for Oshiomhole, the people's governor will not be distracted from his good work.”
