The Ogun State Government has alleged that some elements in the opposition parties in the state are becoming uncomfortable with the achievements of the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration and, therefore, are now adopting desperate measures to undermine the government.

In a statement issued yesterday, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji  Yusuph Olaniyonu, said the opposition elements are deploying subterfuge measures, including spreading false information with a view to inciting certain professional and interest groups against the government.

He noted that when the opposition elements could not fault the government’s projects in the area of infrastructural development and , they had started instigating property owners on the 32 kilometre Sango-Ojodu road against the ongoing construction work in the area.

The commissioner, who recalled that the Sango-Ojodu road was just the latest one being reconstructed by the state government as it has 14 other ongoing projects but that nowhere else did property owners refuse to go to Abeokuta to collect the cheque for their compensation but rather prefer to be campaigning against the government for bringing development to their area.

“The method being adopted by some landlords on that road is curious, particularly in view of the earlier campaign by some politicians that the government would not construct the road. Now, that the contractor has commenced work, the landlords refused to come to Abeokuta to collect their compensation. They have been speaking in the media that government has not paid their compensation and that they would prefer that government stayed action on the road construction work.

“This has led to suggestion in some quarters that the same set of people, who said the road would never be constructed were the ones instigating the landlords not to take the compensation but to continue to blackmail the government through the media,” the commissioner stated.

While advising that people should stop playing politics with development issues, Olaniyonu explained that the same process of paying compensation adopted without any controversy in the other parts of the state where road construction is taking place is being used in the Sango-Ojodu road and that nobody who is due for compensation will be left out.

“Once again, we want to call on our people in Sango-Ojodu area to please continue to co-operate with government and realise that their interest is best served with the construction of the road. They should come to Abeokuta and collect their compensation,” he stated.

The commissioner noted that the same group had been giving ignorant misinterpretation to a memo directing civil servants to clear with the Head of Service before making public statements on policy issues.

“Those who read a memo whose contents were directed at civil servants but copied to officials of government and were making ignorant statements should stop being mischievous. How can any sane person think that the speaker should get clearance from the Head of Service? The speaker and other commissioners were copied on the directive to civil servants working under them. It does not affect them,” he explained.

“Specifically, where was Mr. Isiaka Adegboyega, when under the last administration in which he served, nobody dared to express contrary view or criticise the government without being subjected to harassment and persecution? Now, he is talking about ‘despotism’. Ogun State is now peaceful and everybody who has a view about the government, including the opposition is free to express such views. That is why he is free to even lie about an issue that he lacks any knowledge about,” he
said.
