Last year flood devastated communities of Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Council of Edo State Friday received free malaria drugs and insecticide treated nets.

The drugs and mosquito treated nets were donated to the communities by the Agbami Partners which comprised of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited, Famfa Oil Limited, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Statoil and Petroleo Brasileiro Nigeria Limited in collaboration with Africare Nigeria

Speaking at the occasion, the Director, Star Deepwater Petroleum, Mr Jeffrey Ewing, said the gesture was in line with the groups philosophy of implementing the Roll Back Malaria in the affected communities in order to add value to the lives of the people and contribute positively to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

According to him, “today’s event is another indication of the partners' determined efforts to improve primary health care delivery in Nigeria. Malaria is a major killer disease severely affecting mostly children under five years of age and pregnant women”.

He added that beside malaria, the Agbami partners have also implemented awareness programme on HIV/AIDS, diabetes and other diseases in several communities across the six geo political zones in the country.

Also in his speech, Mr. Patrick Adah, Director, Malaria Projects, Africare-Nigeria, disclosed that the malaria control and health promotion in flood affected populations was a six months project which started October this year to end in March next year.
He noted that the primary aim was to focus on delivering a comprehensive community based approach in reducing the incidence of malaria and associated mortality and morbidity in four selected communities affected by flood, adding "it is aimed at mitigating the health impact of flood in these communities".

Declaring the programme open, Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council, Prince Suleiman Afegbua, expressed joy over the gesture and urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the drugs and treated nets.

The Okumagbe of Weppawano, who was represented by Chief Oshomah Akenabor, commended the Agbami partners for coming to the aid of the flooded affected communities assuring that “our people will make good use of the treated nets and also adhere strictly to the prescription of the malaria drugs distributed to us”.
