About 20 persons were reportedly killed Sunday and 10 others injured, when gunmen suspected to be members of the outlawed Boko Haram sect launched an attack on Logomani village in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
It was gathered that the sect members attacked the village at about 6a.m. and 9a.m. yesterday before they were dispatched by soldiers, who pursued them to the forest surrounding Ngamboru/Ngala.
A resident of Logomani village, Bukar Alhaji Gana, told journalists that about a week before the attack, there were rumours that, some members of the Boko Haram group were seen in the area, heading towards Marte area.
“We were told that some of the Boko Haram members came around and warned some people, but left almost immediately towards Marte. The people who said they have seen them warned that, people should stop coming to the area were trucks usually came to park and rest before continuing their journey towards Ngamboru/Ngala and Tchad,” Gana told journalists.
It was learnt that the gunmen, who were all dressed in military fatigue, after the onslaught left with some women of easy virtue, who were normally at the service of the travelling truck drivers. They were also accused of extorting money from some of the truck drivers.
A passenger, who narrowly escaped being killed by the sect members, revealed to journalists in Maiduguri, that the attackers that stopped their vehicle shot at three passengers and slaughtered 14 other persons before someone alerted them that soldiers were coming, which made them to flee on their motorcycles into the bush.
“When they stopped us, we thought they were soldiers until they began to ask us to come out of the car, it was then we realised they were Boko Haram insurgents. They were dressed in military uniform and killed about 20 before they fled when they were told soldiers are coming,” he said.
Men of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri had averted what could have been a twin-coordinated attack in Konduga and Bama where about 40 terrorists were killed and an unspecified numbers of arms and ammunition were recovered.
As at the time of filing this report, no confirmation of the incident could be gotten from the military authorities with the spokesman of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army Maiduguri, Captain Aliyu Danja, unable to be reached as mobile networks remained lockdown in the state.
