With the overheated arguments and controversies surrounding the sudden breakout of a factional PDP party led by the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, the Africa’s largest political party has all of a sudden erupted into a full-scale crisis perceived at the national level. There has been a lot of catastrophe and predicament enclosing the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) this year. Some months ago, several occurrences were observed during the election of the NGF chairmanship position which in the end of the result, led to two factional groups with one under the Plateau State governor, Jonah Jang, and the other faction under the suspended Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
In an unforeseen event, a different political drama spewed out in Rivers State as five lawmakers attempted to impeach the Speaker of the Rivers State assembly and swear-in a new Speaker, which did not go unchallenged by the Pro-Amaechi lawmakers. Furthermore, this led to the division of the party into two factions with Anti- amaechi camp spearheaded by the Minister of State for education, Nyesom Wike and Felix Obuah, PDP faction chairman and the Amaechi cohorts.
Also, another party crisis occurred in Ekiti State as party members were opposed to each other over some key positions. Additionally, the arrival of the Taraba State ailing governor, Danbaba Suntai, led to a full-blown outrage and rivalry as disagreement over whom to remain in office as governor between the deputy governor, Umar Garba and the ailing governor, rose to the surface. However, unexpected PDP drama unfolded in Anambra governorship primaries, following the emergence of Senator Andy Ubah and Tony Nwoye, as factional candidates in separate primaries. Disputes were made over who wields the gubernatorial ticket and the genuine PDP flag bearer of the forthcoming Anambra gubernatorial election which will hold on the 16th November.
Moreover, the frequent perpetual suspension of prominent PDP members over anti-party activities and the breach of the party constitution by the PDP National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur have further heightened the frustration of some aggrieved members of the party. With the persistent, unanticipated and severe commotion bedevilling the biggest political party dominating the country’s economy, some PDP aggrieved members have surfaced and have taken bold steps towards anti-party activities, thereby threatening the existence of the party, and with their frustration and hatred for the incumbent PDP National Chairman as observed during the PDP special convention held on 31st August, 2013, when seven governors and their cohorts walked out of the President. This bemusing scene of departure was extremely embarrassing, musing, distasteful and totally unacceptable.
The idea and the move to mobilize and usher in a new factional party is completely undemocratic, illegitimate, unconstitutional and unwarranted. This has deteriorated into a far-reaching upheaval at the national level. The party is now seen in shambles and in complete disarray as some renegades and aggrieved members and anti-Tukur loyalists have chosen to split from the political party to form a factional party. This has led to the total breakdown of law and order in the political party. This culture of impunity and indiscipline must be put to a halt.
