8 Abia PDP Members Die in Auto Crash. No fewer than eight members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Abia State died in an auto crash along Awka-Enugu Expressway while returning from Anambra State, where they had gone to conduct ward congress for the party.

The accident reportedly happened at about 11 p.m on Tuesday night while they were returning to Umuahia from Awka through Enugu .

The Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Dr. Abali Chuku, who confirmed the accident to newsmen, said some of the bodies had been deposited at the hospital mortuary.

Chuku explained that four of the 10 victims of the accident, who sustained injuries, were in critical condition and were receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital.

The vehicle they were travelling in was said to have skidded off the road and crashed, killing eight and leaving others seriously injured.

The ward congress was done with the help of the dead party members from Abia State, who worked as auxiliary staff preparatory to the Anambra State governorship election scheduled to hold in November.

The 18-seater hummer bus with 16 passengers on board, was said to have plunged into a ditch resulting in the death of five persons on the spot and three others died on their way to the hospital.

Some of the victims were said to be aides of the state party Chairman, Senator Emma Nwaka and members of staff of the party, working at the secretariat, while the remaining were drawn from different wards in the state.

Daily Sun gathered that four of those who died were from Isuikwuato Local Government Area of the state, where the state party chairman hails from.

Abia State Government has dispatched two ambulances to Enugu to retrieve the dead bodies and some of the survivors. The driver of the PDP bus, Mr Sunday Iroegbu, stated that they were driving in a convoy from Awka to Enugu, when the accident occurred.

Iroegbu, who sustained minor injury on his left wrist, blamed the accident on “over speed” by the pilot vehicle. Meanwhile, the state Governor, Dr Theodore Orji has visited the survivors at the hospital. – sun news.
