Anambra State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday unanimously endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as candidate of the South East zone in the 2015 presidential election.
The endorsement came through a motion moved by the State Party chairman, Prince Ken Emeakayi during a rally at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Park, Awka, to unveil its aspirants who would slug it out in the slated August 24 primaries to pick a candidate to fly its flag in the November 16, governorship election in the state.
Emeakayi had moved the motion for the endorsement of Jonathan before the assemblage which they chorused in the affirmative saying that it was a must that the President flies the party flag in the 2015 presidential election and that the chapter had no other candidate.
He said the state chapter executive had earlier met to pass a vote of confidence on Jonathan and had resolved that the President should be given the offer of first refusal, adding that the chapter would be going to the party’s national convention with the decision to return President Jonathan for a second term.
He added that he would take the message to the 36 state secretariats of PDP across the country before its national convention.
He there after presented Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Dr. Obinna Uzo, senator Emma Anosike, Comrade Tony Nwoye, Mr. Walter Okeke, Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, Chief Charles Odunukwe, chief Sylvester Okonkwo, Josephine Anenhih, and Dr. Jerry Ugokwe as aspirants who purchased nomination forms and returned same and who would be slugging it out in the August 24, primaries.
But one notable absentee at the presentation ceremony was Dr. Andy Uba, the former Governor of the state in 2007 and serving senator for Anambra South senatorial zone who also bought and returned his nomination form. No reason was however given as to why he was absent.
But a claimant to the chairmanship of the state PDP chapter, Mr. Ejike Oguebego had announced in the state Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) that he didn’t convene any meeting at Ekwueme Park yesterday and dissociated himself from it, while asking his supporters not to attend.
But Dr. Bassey Effiong, the statistician in the national office of PDP, Abuja took out time to explain to the mammoth crowd that Emeakayi was the authentic state chairman recognised by the party and its National Working committee (NCW) and urged every party member and supporter to queue behind him.
Emeakayi who allowed each of the aspirants two minutes to briefly address the over 5, 000 supporters and stakeholders that thronged the Alex Ekwueme Park from the state’s 21 local government areas told them that there was neither a sacred cow nor an anointed candidate and that they should all go to their respective wards and work very hard to convince the grass roots on their eligibility and suitability to fly the party’s flag and ensure that the party won the forth coming council polls and governorship elections convincingly.
He said officers of the party were banned from being co-coordinators to any of the aspirants assuring that the ward delegate election fixed for August 12, to elect delegates for the primaries would be transparent , adding that the ward electoral officers had been mandated to declare the results of the delegate election on the spot before bringing same to the state party secretariat. Three delegates he stated, would be elected from each of the 326 wards in the state.
One of the national officers of PDP and former senate President, Dr. Adolphus Nwagbara and members of both the party’s NWC and zonal executives expressed confidence in the leadership of Prince Emeakayi to lead the party in the state to victory, adding that there is no faction in the chapter.
