The Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Values, Dr Sarah Jubril, has advocated true Federalism as a panacea to the myriad of problems confronting Nigeria.

Jubril made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at the launch of a book entitled “Emerging Issues in Niger Delta and True Federalism” authored by a veteran journalist, Mr Julius Enehikhuere.

The presidential aide, in her remarks at the event, decried the lack of true federalism in the country, and stressed the need for politicians to work together for the peace and stability of the country.

“We have to work together as a nation to achieve effective federalism; our leaders at all levels must have the political and ethical will to do what is right and shun all forms of corruption,’’ she said.

She called on politicians to work to promote the virtues that unite the nation and avoid divisive issues in the country.

Jubril said that the Federal government was already evolving a holistic approach through ethics and value to re-orientate and transform Nigerians into nation builders.

She commended the author of the book for the bold initiative, noting that the book addressed some of the salient issues of national development.

Earlier, Gov. Sule Lamido of Jigawa, in his remarks, also harped on the need for true federalism and peaceful co-existence for the nation to achieve rapid development.

The governor, who was represented by his Director of Media, Malam Umar Kyari, said that in spite of  the meagre resources of Jigawa State, the governor had transformed the state through prudent spending and grass-roots development.

“In spite of the meagre resources available to Jigawa, the governor has been able to transform the state through hard work and judicious use of funds.’’

He said the state government had been able to take Jigawa from being the poorest state in the country to one of the most viable states in the country through its masses-oriented programmes.

Kyari said the government had reduced infant mortality rate in the state, raised educational standard, improved health and other facilities in the drive for higher living standard in Jigawa.

“The facelift of Jigawa under its transformation includes an international airport,’’ he added

Enehikhuere, the author of the book, in his remarks, said the book was meant to highlight the development issues in the Niger Delta and the need for true federalism in the country.

He stressed the need for state governments to look inward and improve on revenue generated internally rather than relying or waiting for the monthly allocation from the Federal Government.

Reviewing the book, Celsus Ohain, noted that the author of the more than 200-page book comprising six chapters, addressed all issues dispassionately.

“The book has critically examined the tenure of President Goodluck Jonathan, highlighting the thrust of the agenda of the administration in the areas of electricity supply, youth employment, infrastructure development and security.

“The author scored the administration high in the areas it excelled, while he also missed no word where standards fell below expectations.

“While the development of the Niger Delta region remained the intent of the book, it is not silent on the fact that certain issues need to be addressed from the national perspective since their negative impacts and effects have been common denominators in all parts of the federation.

“The book also addresses the need to complete abandoned projects by governments at all levels and commended the efforts of Jonathan and the late President Musa Yar’Adua on the amnesty project and development of the region,’’ Ohain said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the book is an update of an earlier publication written five years ago by the same author.
