Uyo – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Akwa Ibom on Thursday said it prosecuted 91 traffic offenders in its mobile court for various offences from January to July.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Gods-Gift Uwem, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo, that 77 persons were convicted while 14 persons were jail without option of fine.
According to him, those arrested were prosecuted and convicted for offences such as non-use of seat belt, poor lighting system, dangerous driving, use of phone while driving and drivers’ licence violation.
“The offenders were sentenced at the discretion of the magistrate, depending on the traffic offence committed and in line with the stipulated punishment.
“Most of those sentenced to jail were made to serve for periods ranging from the minimum of two weeks to maximum of three months,” he said.
He said the decision to prosecute offenders was to force motorists to inculcate driving culture and drive to stay alive with a view to reducing carnage on the roads.
