History was made recently as a physically-challenged student, Master Mahmud Abdullahi, from Government College Azare, Bauchi State, emerged winner of the 12th annual national essay competition of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
The grand finale and awards ceremony, which took place in Lagos had over 100 students from various secondary schools in attendance and was also graced by prominent Nigerians in the financial and educational sectors.
Abdullahi got N250,000 scholarship fund, N250,000 equity investment and a mini Notebook computer, while the second prize winner, Miss Idara Effiom of The Lagoon Secondary School, Lagos was awarded a N150,000 scholarship fund, N150,000 equity investment and mini notebook computer.
On the other hand, the third prize winner, Miss Promise Eleke of Prizemates Model Academy, Abia State got N100,000 scholarship fund, N100,000 equity investment and mini notebook computer.
Speaking on the competition, the Chief Executive Officer of the NSE, Mr. Oscar Onyema, noted that it was the first time in the history of the competition that a physically-challenged student emerged winner of the competition, noting that in all, 24 students were awarded consolation prizes of various types.
“We believe that the impact of this initiative is commendable as we have recorded an increase in the number of participants, high level of interest, and created awareness of the dynamics of the stock exchange. We are particularly thrilled at being able to support and foster sound financial literacy amongst our youth” said Onyema
Also speaking, Head, Corporate Services Division, NSE, Mr. Bola Adeeko, said: “When we started planning the 12th Edition of the competition, our target was to double the entries received from secondary schools last year from 500 to 1000. And this we surpassed in no time. We also targeted getting more young people involved in both the capital market and the exchange’s financial literacy programme.”
Adeeko disclosed that essays were screened based on the subject matter of the competition, language of expression, organisation and mechanical accuracy, noting that entries came from 300 secondary schools while 1,300 students spread across the six geopolitical zones of the country participated this year.
