A MAN needed 33 stiches after he was glassed by two men in a unprovoked attack at a Melbourne nightclub at the weekend.

The victim, a 33-year-old Coburg man, was at the Basemint nightclub in Queen St in the early hours of Sunday when he was set upon by two men in the venue’s toilets, police said.

He was slashed across the left side of his face and head with what is believed to be a broken glass.

Sgt Paul Henry, from Melbourne crime investigation unit, said the victim suffered horrific facial injuries and was lucky to escape the attack alive.

“It’s a very nasty glassing,” Sgt Henry said.

“In these situations, a piece of glass going a few centimetres either way could turn this sort of attack into a homicide.”

It is believed the assailants fled up the stairs and out the front door after a security guard intervened.

Police believe the two attackers are regulars at the Queen St club.

Sgt Henry said police had spoken to a number of people at the club at the time of the incident, but are yet to identify the attackers.

“We have security footage that shows two men we believe could help us with the investigation,” Sgt Henry said.

“We’d also like to speak with a man seen to exit the toilet after the assault and step over the victim who was lying on the ground.”

One man was wearing a dark brown leather jacket and had dark facial hair.

The second man removed a long-sleeved top to reveal a green and white striped T-shirt underneath.

Both men are said to have olive complexions.

Police would also like to speak to the two other men, seen at the club at the time of the attack.
