NIGERIA: Maternal death claim 287, 000 women, girls every year – UN

Read Time:1 Minute, 26 Second

Approximately 287,000 women and girls die each year of pregnancy and delivery-related complications, the Executive Director of UN Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, has said.

Osotimehin disclosed this at an event to mark the countdown of the last 1,000 days to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015 on Friday in New York.

He said that the complications remained the number one killer of 15 to 19 year-old-girls in the developing world, stressing that more than 300 million women live with maternal illnesses and injuries such as fistula.

According to him, about 222 million women in the developing world lack access to modern contraceptives.

“We have cause to celebrate the successes achieved around the world but we must also urgently increase our work, resources and actions in areas that are lagging behind.

“In 2000, the world pledged to reduce maternal deaths by three quarters by 2015 from their 1990 levels through MDG 5. Maternal deaths have dropped by 47 per cent globally, but MDG 5 is the goal that lags the farthest behind.

“Maternal deaths and disabilities and unintended pregnancies hold societies back. They perpetuate intergenerational poverty and impede sustainable development by infringing on women’s rights and capacities, while harming the survival and health of children.

“That is why we must all intensify our efforts in these last 1,000 days and beyond,’’ Osotimehin said.

Osotimehin said that UNFPA and its partners support countries with high levels of maternal death and unmet need for family planning to improve policies.

“We also leverage broad partnerships and resources to accelerate support to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights,’’ he said.

How to survive a heart attack when you are alone?

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 1 Second

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

A cardiologist says If everyone who sees this post shares it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save at least one life..

Rather than sharing jokes only please contribute by forwarding this info which can save a person's life..

Early-morning Smokers At Increased Risk Of Lung And Oral Cancer

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 9 Second

The sooner a person smokes a cigarette upon waking in the morning, the more likely he or she is to acquire lung or oral cancer, according to Penn State researchers.

“We found that smokers who consume cigarettes immediately after waking have higher levels of NNAL — a metabolite of the tobacco-specific carcinogen NNK — in their blood than smokers who refrain from smoking a half hour or more after waking, regardless of how many cigarettes they smoke per day,” said Steven Branstetter, assistant professor of biobehavioral health.

According to Branstetter, other research has shown that NNK (4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-[3-pyridyl]-1-butanone) induces lung tumors
in several rodent species. Levels of NNAL (4-(methylnitrosamnino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol) in the blood can therefore predict lung cancer risk in rodents as well as in humans.

In addition, NNAL levels are stable in smokers over time, and a single measurement can accurately reflect an individual’s exposure.

Branstetter and his colleague Joshua Muscat, professor of public health sciences, examined data on 1,945 smoking adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who had provided urine samples for analysis of NNAL. These participants also had provided information about their smoking behavior, including how
soon they typically smoked after waking.

The researchers found that around 32 percent of the participants they examined smoked their first cigarette of the day within 5 minutes of waking; 31 percent smoked within 6 to 30 minutes of waking; 18 percent smoked within 31 to 60 minutes of waking; and 19 percent smoked more than one hour after waking. In addition, the researchers found that the NNAL level in the participants’ blood was correlated with the participants’ age, the age they started smoking, their gender and whether or not another smoker lived in their home, among other factors.

The team published its results in  the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

“Most importantly, we found that NNAL level was highest among people who smoked the soonest upon waking, regardless of the frequency of smoking and other factors that predict NNAL concentrations,” Branstetter said. “We believe these people who smoke sooner after
waking inhale more deeply and more thoroughly, which could explain the higher levels of NNAL in their blood, as well as their higher risk of developing oral or lung cancer. As a result, time to first cigarette might be an important factor in the identification of high-risk smokers and in the development of interventions targeted toward early-morning smokers.”

Trouble in Nigeria’s house of health …as strike looms

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 31 Second

THERE is trouble in Nigeria’s house of health at the Federal level, where health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, are spoiling for a showdown with Federal government.

The grouse of the workers, comprising nurses, midwives, laboratory scientists, non-academic staff and others affiliated with the five unions in the health sector,  and the Assembly of all Health Professional Associations, all operating under  JOHESU,in Federal hospitals and other institutions, is not unconnected with series of issues which they describe as inimical to their welfare in particular and healthcare delivery in the country in general.

Top on the demands of the workers include, among others, the call for the sack of the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu: implementation of the May 10, 2012 Collective Agreement  that caters for promotion of members under the controversial CONHESS 14 to 15 (among other issues), and the cessation of appointment of medical and dental professionals as Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of Federal tertiary health institutions.

They also alleged various acts of discrimination and victimisation while decrying what they described as paltry compensation of families of health workers killed by extremists in Kano State during the National Programme on Immunisation exercise.
On March 18, 2013,    JOHESU declared a nine-point trade dispute upon which itissued a 15-day ultimatum to Federal Government to implement the May 10, 2012 Collective Agreement, among others.

Although spirited moves were made  to  resolve the protracted industrial dispute at the highest levels including JOHESU, the  Ministry  of Labour and Productivity,  the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission and the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, NICN, findings reveal that much remain to be desired, and even as the  ultimatum  expires today, a shadow of uncertainty hangs over fortunes of the nation’s health sector.

Just last week, at a media parley in Lagos the health workers unanimously  threatened to “perpetuate unrest within the health sector” if the  stated demands are not met.

They have called on President  Goodluck Jonathan to wade into the ongoing deterioration of health services especially at the tertiary level of care which they allege has turned hospitals in the country into mere consulting clinics.

Making the call during an update of happenings and developments in the health sector, National Chairman, JOHESU, and President, Medical & Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Dr. Ayuba Wabba, urged the President to step in and save the sector from imminent collapse.
“The industrial relation atmosphere in the health sector has been the worst in recent times and the total absence of a harmonious working relationship between medical and dental practitioners on one hand and other health professionals on the other.

“The cliff of disharmony encouraged by the Minister of Health keeps widening daily and we are very concerned. Nigerians who are entitled to quality healthcare services   are at the receiving end,” he remarked.

However, a statement from the office of the Minister of Health said  a careful scrutiny of the grievances “indicate that there is either a demand for what is not provided for in Extant Government Circulars and Regulations or what requires a review of relevant Laws and Regulations by the appropriate agencies and organs of government”.

Career structure

According to the statement: “If anything, it is under the watch of Prof. C.O. Onyebuchi Chukwu as Minister of Health that progress was made in adjusting the career structure for health workers, removing the barrier to promotion to the directorate cadre for health workers.

“It is surprising that they would call for the removal of the  Minister under whose watch, Nigeria’s score rose from 47.5 percent in 2009 to 50.7 percent in 2011 in the Mo Ibrahim Human Development Index (Health Category).  When considered in totality especially as some of the matters they are aggrieved about are already before the Industrial Arbitration Court and the Federal Ministry of Health with scheduled meetings ahead to resolve all outstanding matters,” the statement said

The Cancer FIghter: Environmental toxins in the body

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 31 Second

There are several types of toxins that can build up in the body. If you are fighting cancer, it is especially important you remove these toxins from your system or you will never be able to effectively deal with the disease.

As you have learned from previous chapters, you can physically remove a cancerous tumor, but unless you also remove the original cause, the cancer will ultimately return.

Type 1: Cellular Toxicity
Cellular toxicity is formed when there is a buildup of acidity in the body preventing the body from getting rid of dangerous toxins. The toxins have nowhere else to go and end up taking residence in our vital cells. You don’t need me to tell you that this simply isn’t good.

Type 2: Heavy Metal Toxicity
Do you eat a lot of fresh water fi sh? Do you have a mouthful of
amalgam fi llings? Th en you may have heavy metal toxicity. Heavy metal toxicity results from years of being exposed to toxic heavy metals. The body becomes weak and vulnerable to disease. If you receive a cancer diagnosis it’s vital to do what you can to remove these deadly heavy metals from your body. The best way to do this is to take three days to drink only pure water (and organic herbal teas) and consume organic and locally grown fresh fruits and veggies.

Type 3: Chemical Toxicity
On a daily basis we’re all exposed to chemicals. Depending on your body’s own unique makeup these chemicals can build up and lead to chemical toxicity or your body can simply expel the chemicals as long as there aren’t too many on a daily basis to deal with.
Chemicals used to clean your house, wash your car, do the dishes and laundry, as well as kill weeds in your fl ower garden can all contribute to chemical toxicity. Th is buildup eventually catches up with the body
resulting in disease as well as organ and skin problems.

Type 4: Colon Toxicity
You may have seen some of the news stories of patients engaging in colon cleansing to remove colon toxins. A glance at any one of these pictures reveals a lot of disturbing material coming out of the body during a colon cleansing to fi ght colon toxicity. From entire, intact vitamin pills to what looks like hardened rubber, it’s shocking to find what’s been sitting inside of your colon for years, maybe even decades.

Colon toxicity is the result of hard to digest food and unpassed fecal matter staying inside of the colon for far longer than it is supposed to stay. When these matters aren’t eliminated from the body these toxic materials begin to decay and release their toxins into the body. This not only adds more dangerous toxins to the body it prevents the proper absorption of nutrients from the other foods we’re eating. I recommend regular colon cleanses.

Bird flu Killed two men in china

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 10 Second

Two men have died in the Chinese city of Shanghai, after contracting a strain of bird flu not previously known in humans, Chinese officials say.

The men, aged 27 and 87, both fell ill with the H7N9 strain in February and died some weeks later in March, Xinhua news agency reported.

A woman of 35 who caught the virus elsewhere is said to be critically ill.

It is unclear how the strain spread, but the three did not infect each other or any close contacts, officials say.

While both men who died were in Shanghai, the third victim was reported in Chuzhou in the eastern province of Anhui.

According to China's National Health and Family Planning Commission, all three became ill with coughs and fevers before developing pneumonia.

Commission experts said on Saturday the cause had been identified as H7N9, a strain of avian flu not thought to have been transmitted to humans before.

There is no vaccine against the strain, the commission said, adding it was currently testing to assess its ability to infect humans.

Another strain of bird flu, H5N1, has led to more than 360 confirmed human deaths since 2003 and the deaths of tens of millions of birds.

The World Health Organization says that most avian flu viruses do not infect humans and the majority of H5N1 cases have been associated with contact with infected poultry.

Nigeria spends N78.5bn per annum to import insulin

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

Nigeria spends about $500m (about N78.5bn) every year on the importation of insulin, Director-General, National Biotechnology Development Agency, Prof. Bamidele Solomon, has said.

Solomon, who said this at NABDA roundtable on Biosimilars: Framework for Affordable Biologic Drugs in Africa, in Abuja, also disclosed that the agency was collaborating with international agencies and the local pharmaceutical industry for its local manufacture.

Insulin is used in the management of diabetic patients and Solomon said the number had been rising in the country in recent years.

The intervention of NABDA has seen to the creation of new curriculum for pharmacy students in all the pharmaceutical schools in the country in collaboration with the National Universities Commission and the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria.

The new curriculum is meant to address the inadequate capacity in pharmacy graduates, especially in biopharmaceuticals, which uses biotechnology and genetic engineering methodology.

Solomon identified the pharmaceutical companies that are involved in the project as Chi Pharmaceutical Nigeria Limited and Neimeth.

He said, “The agency has been working to see that we get something similar to what happens in India where various generic products are developed and produced. We have been working with NUC to get a curriculum that can address the necessary manpower.

“We are working with international bodies that could link us up with and provide us with the intellectual property, that give us royalty free access to some of these drugs. That is the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology
