A Consultant Gastroenterologist, Dr Rose Ugiagbe, on Friday identified pain killer drugs, bacterial infection and other anti-inflammatory drugs as the major causes of stomach ulcer.

Ugiagbe of the Department of Medicine, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin, said this in an interview in Benin.

She said that a bacterium called “helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)” and pain killer drugs called Nonsteroidal (NSAIDs) could predispose an individual to stomach ulcer.

An Online Publication- medicinenet.com said, “Helicobacter pylorus (H. pylori) is a bacterium that causes chronic inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach (gastritis) in human being.

“This bacterium is also considered as a common cause of ulcers worldwide as 90 per cent of people with ulcers have detectable organisms.”

The gastroenterologist said, “Stomach ulcer, also known as Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) was a defect or hole in the lining of the stomach.

“PUD can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, but it commonly occurs in the stomach or duodenum or both.

“Acid and pepsin are secreted continuously in the stomach, but peptic ulcers do not always occur.

“This is because, there are defence mechanisms in the body which prevent ulcerations from happening but when there is a breakdown of these mechanisms, peptic ulcers occur.

“It is estimated that more than 70 per cent of the persons who have peptic ulcer have this bacterial infection.

“This infection can be transmitted from an infected person to a non-infected person through faeces to mouth,” she said.

The expert said that drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen, dicliofenac piroxican, indomethacine, and felvin were examples of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that predispose people to stomach ulcer.
