Tarzoor vs Gov Ortom: Appeal Court to deliver judgement this week

MAKURDI — The Court of Appeal, Makurdi Division, will this week deliver its ruling on the appeal filed by Benue State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in the last general elections, Terhemen Tarzoor, challenging the judgement of the state’s governorship election petition tribunal.

The Justice Elizabeth Karatu-led tribunal had, about two months ago, dismissed the petition of Tarzoor on the grounds that Governor Samuel Ortom of All Progressives Congress, APC, was validly nominated by his party to contest the governorship poll, contrary to the contention of the petitioner.

At the Justice Garuba Mohammed-led appellate court, weekend, counsel to the PDP governorship candidate and appellant, Mr. Adebayo Adenipekun, SAN, urged the court to upturn the judgement of the trial court because it was repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience.

On his part, counsel to Governor Ortom, Chief Adeniyi Akintola, SAN, urged the court to dismiss the appeal for incompetence.

In his ruling, Justice Mohammed reserved judgement in the appeal to a later date but not later than next Thursday, the terminal date of the appeal proceedings.

He said the parties would be duly informed of the scheduled day for judgement by the court registrar.
