Host team Sweden crushed their Finnish sisters 5-0 in Saturday night’s first round match in the 2013 UEFA European Women's Championship finals in Gothenburg. The Swedes displayed their superiority in all aspects of the game to walk away with the biggest ever win in a European women’s championship game.

With Sweden touted as a favourite to win the competition, Finland went into Saturday night’s match as the acknowledged underdogs. Sweden did not disappoint the bookies or their home fans, coming away with an overwhelming and record-setting 5-0 victory.

The black shirts took a business-like lead after just 15 minutes of play, following up with a second goal in the 36th minute of the game, with Nilla Fischer finding the back of the net on both occasions. Just two minutes later in the 38th minute, Kosovore Asllani stealthily found a space to score a third goal for the host team.

Sweden dominant throughout

The second half of the game saw the Swedes continue their domination of the field as Finland struggled to gain possession of the ball and to string passes together.

In the 60th minute Sweden took a fourth goal and decisively clinched the game with a fifth in the 87th minute, both off shots from Lotta Schelin.

Sweden were stronger than their neighbours in every aspect of the game, leaving Finland one step behind and licking their wounds at the end of the encounter.

Finland will have to regain their confidence and sharpen their skills for their next encounter in the tournament against Denmark on Tuesday July 16.
