In Turku and in Vantaa, the thermometer has dropped to -15C more often this month than it did for the whole period of December through February.
"Helsinki will be in the same class if -15 temperatures are still recorded for a couple of days," points out Meteorologist Jari Tuovinen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
According to Tuovinen, December was generally cold, but average seasonal temperatures were raised by milder weather in January and February. In Oulu, December was so cold that March's freezing temperatures can't compare.
Jari Tuovinen says that the present month is now very close to being the coldest March in 50 years.
