In the celebration of the International Women’s Day on March 8th, 2011 Saido Mohamed was awarded the prize of the Refugee Woman of the Year.

The 36 year old nurse received the prize for her impressive involvement in the field of voluntary work. The board of the Finnish Refugee Council also considered that Saido’s work and achievements inspire and encourage young people who wish to preserve their diversified identity and at the same time become a part of the Finnish society.

Besides the work in the Somali league and in many youth organisations, Saido has since 2004 worked as an expert in KokoNainen project of the Finnish League for Human Rights. The project aims to prevent the female circumcision.

Saido was brought up in a middle class family in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The onset of the civil war forced her to leave the capital and to live along with other families in the Somali countryside. Since Somalia was no longer a safe place to live in, Saido was in the age of 16 sent to Kenya. In 1992 Saido migrated to Hämeenlinna, Finland. Saido Mohamed has studied at Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences from where she graduated in 2001.
