Vice ChancellorTHE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has threatened a showdown with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Boniface Egboka, over alleged violation of the directive of the visitor, President Goodluck Jonathan, on the appointment of Senate members into the Governing Council of the institution.

The institution’s ASUU had, at its emergency meeting on April 9 resolved to boycott all Senate meetings until it was properly
constituted according to law, those opposed to ASUU had continued to attend Senate meetings and elect internal members of the Governing Council.

The institution’s chairman of ASUU, Prof. Ike Odimegwu, maintained that the composition of the university’s Senate has been a contentious issue. The visitor’s directive and properly reconstitute the senate were rebuffed, leaving ASUU with no other option than to see redress in court. ASUU obtained a court order stopping another irregular senate meeting he scheduled for February 27, 2013.

“This notwithstanding, the vice chancellor reconvened the irregular
senate meeting on April 2nd through SMS message.
“Again, the vice chancellor, in disregard of the pending case in court and clear defiance of the rule of law scheduled another senate yesterday for the purpose of electing four senate representatives in the governing council.

“We humbly request all well–meaning Nigerians to advise the vice chancellor to refrain from proceeding with the said election of internal members of the council until senate is properly constituted in accordance with the law.” Contacted on the allegation of ASUU,
Director of Information of the university, Mr. Emma Ojukwu, said
there was nothing to comment.

In the meantime, the congress of ASUU in the university took place for the greater part of yesterday at the Rufai Garba Square of the university.
