The embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was today, Jan. 25, brought to court in handcuffs for his bail hearing.
A Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned the ruling till January 29, 2016.
Kanu is facing a six-count charge bordering on allegations of treasonable felony, maintaining an unlawful society and illegal possession of firearms, among others.
Citing sections 158 and 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), Kanu’s lawyer Vincent Obeta argued that the sections contain his client’s statutory right to bail since he was not charged for a capital offence.
He said Kanu’s offence borders on civil right issues, noting that the right to agitate is guaranteed in a democracy.
In a counter argument, the prosecution counsel, Mohammed Diri, insisted that the application did not meet the conditions stipulated in section 162 of the ACJA.
He urged the court to deny the bail application and accelerate hearing into the matter, stating that Kanu may escape if he is released on bail. He added that the Biafra agitator has dual citizenship.
Following the arguments from both counsels, Justice John Tsoho, said the application would be decided on Friday.
According to report, Kanu and his supporter engaged in an argument with prison officials shortly after the seession.
Justice Tsoho on January 20, had ordered that Kanu be remanded in Kuje prison pending hearing on his bail application.

The House of Representatives committee investigating the $470m Close Circuit Television (CCTV) project came out with some startling revelations.
The committee claims Nigeria was short changed by the Chinese firm- ZTE, that handled the project.
According to Punch, the committee said “The contract for the installation of CCTV cameras in Abuja and Lagos by the Ministry of Police Affairs is part of a larger project titled, ‘Nigerian National Public Security Communications System, facilitated by an EXIM Bank of China loan.
“The CCTV camera installations are only an integral part of the entire project, which include the installation of 2,000 digital solar-powered cameras, 1,000 each for Abuja and Lagos; 37 switch rooms, microwave backbone; 37 coalition emergency response systems; 38 video conference subs-systems; 37 e-police systems; six emergency communication vehicles; and 1.5 million phone lines for subscribers to generate revenue.”
They added that the ZTE stopped working after collecting the sum of $100m.
The CCTV project was awarded during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure.

Jimmy Carr’s joke about dwarves on BBC1’s The One Show was offensive and broke broadcasting rules, the media watchdog has said.
Carr, who was promoting of his greatest hits tour, told viewers he had once come up with a two-word joke.
“I tried to write the shortest joke possible,” he said. “So, I wrote a two-word joke which was: ‘Dwarf shortage’. It’s just so I could pack more jokes into the show.”
Fellow guest Rod Stewart attempted to keep a straight face while The One Show host Alex Jones grimaced.
Carr added: “If you’re a dwarf and you’re offended by that, grow up.”
Broadcasting regulator Ofcom, which received 11 complaints about the incident which aired in November, said that the comments were capable of causing “considerable offence”.
“We found this programme broke broadcasting rules because of offensive comments made by comedian Jimmy Carr,” said Ofcom.
“We found Jimmy Carr’s comments, which attempted to derive humour from the medical condition of dwarfism, were capable of causing considerable offence. Although one of the presenters made an apology towards the end of the programme, we considered it was not sufficient to mitigate the offence caused by Mr Carr’s remarks.”
Carr has a track record of making controversial jokes. At 2014’s Q Awards he reportedly made a tasteless joke about the death of Oscar Pistorius’s girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
