Biafra: the danger of the single story and the mistakes of the past

Read Time:7 Minute, 41 Second

Have you heard the story of Biafra lately? It has become the story of how igbos were massacred in the north, how they exodused all parts of the country back to the eastern part of Nigeria, how messiah Ojukwu couldn’t take it any longer and declared the igbos independent and the new country called Biafra was born. The story of Biafra is being told as the story of how Gowon was angered by the declaration of the independence of Biafra and how he sent soldiers to kill the igbos.

This is the story you will read in countless books written by the igbos; this is the story you see in the movie “Half Of A Yellow Sun”, a movie adapted from a book with same name written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who was not even born during the war but was told about the war.

Watch the movie and you will see what they told her about the war: in the movie you will see the bombings of the igbos and the destruction of the land of Biafra. You will see disease and pain, suffering and death caused by the Nigerian troops. That is what the story of Biafra has become. It is not a lie. But it is a single story, with the other part being deliberately left out.

In the movie we were not shown how the Hausa/Fulani lived happily with the igbos before some young igbo soldiers gathered the Hausa/Fulani leaders and shot them to dead. Sadly there is no scene in that movie that showed how Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu raided the home of the revered Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sarduana of Sokoto and killed him brutally before his wives and children, even killing one of his wives alongside.

No scene in that movie showed us how the Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa was killed and how the president Nnamdi Azikiwe escaped the bullets of the young igbo coupists. No one is telling us about how Ironsi came on board and failed to bring the coupists to quick justice. No scene told us about the insolence of Ojukwu in refusing to submit to the authority of Gowon. This is the danger of the single story.

So nobody knows the pains of the north in waking up one day and finding out that their top leaders have been killed by their igbo brothers. We will never understand their rage and heartbreak. Maybe because they have refused to write their own single story books or produce “The Other Half Of The Yellow Sun” movie.

The coup was wrong. The killings in the north was wrong. The declaration of Biafra and civil war was a mistake we could have avoided. But these mistakes happened not because of the existence of the above facts but due to the generalization of these facts. When the igbo coupists killed the northern leaders, the northerners were enraged and attacked their igbo brothers. That was a generalization. Major Nzeogwu and his boys were igbos but they were not representatives of the igbo nation, the coupists didn’t consult the igbos before they struck but the north poured their rage on innocent igbos. Their rage might have been justified but their conclusion and outpour of their rage was not.

Then Ojukwu foisted his dreams on a frustrated people. He led a people to fight a war they didn’t want, a war they were not prepared for and when ultimate defeat came, he ran away and left the people he promised he will never leave. In the heat of the civil war the voice of Ojukwu boomed over the Radio: “Fellow Biafrans, where will you run? We ran away from Lagos and fled Northern Nigeria by the thousands. In the battle fields, we ran and allowed the enemies to advance. Must we also run in our homeland? Face the enemy and fight him, street by street, house by house. This is the moment to die for Biafra.” Such powerful oratory. But Ojukwu didn’t stand and fight, he ran.

Before Ojukwu declared the Biafra independence he did not inform them about the consequences of war. He refused all political solutions to the crisis and forced the hand of Gowon who like Abraham Lincoln in 1861 must keep the country one. The rage of Ojukwu might have been justified but was declaring the birthing of a nation the way he did the best solution or he was just carving out an empire to rule?

Today, we are here again; confronted with a ping pong of aspirations, egos, errors and generalizations. Are we going to repeat the mistakes of the past or we are wiser? In 1966 we concluded, erroneously, that Major Nzeogwu and co represented the igbos in their bloody coup, today we are making the same mistake; we are concluding that MASSOB and Radio Biafra represent the generality of the igbos.

These people or groups have not acquired the rights, legally and culturally, to speak for or represent the igbos in anyway. Their aim is to deceive us that they represent the Igbos and they are flourishing because we are buying into this lie. When MASSOB and their ilk talk they speak for themselves then mislead us into thinking they are speaking for every igbo, then we reply, enraged, at every igbo man or woman, our friends and brothers. Let history not repeat itself.

Even some of the igbos who are being deceived that these groups speak for them should also be wary. Biafra has become the password to fame, glory and wealth to a lot of people. They don’t really care about igbos. They have discovered that all they need to say to get on TV is the word BIAFRA. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie did not share the monies she made from selling the book/movie “Half of A Yellow Sun” with hardworking Igbos who are toiling daily to make ends meet. For her Biafra is simple another material to write fiction for book signings, awards, fame and fat accounts.

They only shout BIAFRA when it is profitable to them. A true Igbo woman will marry and bear the husband’s name. A true Igbo will not support same sex marriage, homosexuality and lesbianism as Chimamanda does. Biafra is simply their password to manipulate the Igbo masses.

My brothers and sisters be wise. When the bullets begin to sing and the bombs begin to drop these “give-us-Biafra” leaders have access to helicopters like Ojukwu to escape to safe havens. The sad irony is that those who through their oratory and garagara lead millions to die during wars end up dying at a very old age.

Don’t let them use our common problems to manipulate you. The problems of poverty, deprivation and want is truly with us in this country. No part of Nigeria is having it easy at the expense of others. Don’t let them fool you. Together we will work this out.

Those who are looking for an empire to be carved out for them to rule will tell you that if you break away from Nigeria all will be well, but that is not true. Don’t trust them. The problems won’t just go away because you change a country’s name, coat of arm, flag and national anthem. See how Kanu and Uwazurike are fighting each other. They are already struggling for who will be the Lord and Master of the igbo Biafra. They think Biafra is their path to greatness. But as the venerable Nnamdi Azikiwe once put it “Greatness can be achieved by an idiot just as immortality can be achieved by an ass. But true greatness and worthwhile immortality can be achieved by a selected few.”

Even if anyone wants to leave the Federal Republic of Nigeria there are legal and international acceptable procedures to be followed not the song of war being played on Radio Biafra. Forget all those Generals of invisible armies on social media calling for war. They don’t know what war is. They think what they saw in the movie “Half of a Yellow Sun” is war. This generation has not seen war. Ask those from Sierra Leone, Sudan and Syria, let they tell you what war is.

The duty of the armed forces, Police and DSS is to keep this country one and indivisible. Except any part of this country is released legally from the oneness as enshrined in our constitution any part that tries to pull out illegally and forcefully must be stopped. The security operatives should not take the threat of these violence mongers lying low. Every bit of information should be investigated and nipped in the bud before we get to the point where brothers will begin to kill brothers… again.

And I call on our leaders to improve our commonwealth. This has always been the root cause of all agitations. “All nations of the world are afflicted with tribal consciousness. Good government can minimize or obliterate it.” – Nnamdi Azikiwe

APC hails Nigerian Supreme Court as Wike loses appeal on jurisdiction

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 36 Second

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, lauds the Nigerian Supreme Court on its decision to throw out the bid by Wike to declare the sitting of the Rivers State Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja as being against the law.

The apex court ruled that the President of the Court of Appeal acted in line with the ‎law in transferring the sitting of the tribunal to Abuja for security reasons. The court also affirmed the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which had earlier okayed the decision of the Tribunal to assume jurisdiction.

As a party, the APC is grateful that all seven eminent jurists of the Supreme Court unanimously agreed that there was sufficient violence before, during and after the elections to justify the relocation of the tribunal to Abuja and that the relocation of the tribunal to Abuja was to safeguard the lives of the tribunal chairman, members and witnesses. The apex court likened the violence in Rivers to that of a theatre of war such as is prevailing in the North-East.

We note with delight that Justice Okoro from Akwa Ibom State not only concurred but went further to say that Rivers State was a theatre of war and as such protection of life and limbs of members of the panel and interested parties was paramount and thus relocation of the Panel imperative.

The APC also commends the eminent Supreme Court Justices for once again re-affirming that they always dispense justice without fear or favour despite the frequent boasts by Nyesom Wike that he has all the Justices of the Supreme Court in his pocket, whatever that means.

The significance of all seven eminent Justices of the Supreme Court speaking in one voice in today’s judgment is that the faith, hope and confidence of the ordinary Nigerian to get justice is assured in the Nigerian judicial system.

Tribunal Judgement: We dedicate victory to those killed in the struggle – APC

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 31 Second

…Challenges Wike to submit to fresh polls if he is indeed popular

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has dedicated Saturday’s victory over Chief Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to its members killed during the campaign period and the annulled election itself, alleging that over 100 APC members lost their lives to agents of Wike and PDP in their desperation to win the April 11, 2015 governorship election, which was on Saturday afternoon in Abuja annulled by the Justice Mohammed Ambrusa-led Tribunal.

“We wish to formally dedicate the Tribunal judgement to our over 100 members killed by agents of Wike and PDP and wish to reiterate that their death shall never be in vain as we are determined to install, by the grace of God and with the help of the good people of Rivers State, a god-fearing administration that will take Rivers State to the next level,” the State APC said in a statement issued Monday in Port Harcourt and signed by its Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

The party said it has noted the sorrowful lamentations by Wike and the PDP leadership both at the State and the National levels since the Tribunal nullified the election, but said that the three-man tribunal could not have done otherwise.

“While these lamentations are understandable, we strongly condemn the reckless utterances of Wike and Rivers PDP that tend to impugn the integrity of the Tribunal. Wike’s loss seems to have affected his sense of reasoning; if not, how could he open his mouth and accuse APC of bribing Tribunals to rule against PDP candidates in the South-South?” the party said.

It reminded Wike and PDP that both local and international observers, including the European Community, condemned the Rivers gubernatorial and other elections as a sham and an exercise in impunity, lawlessness and criminality which can only be applauded by mindless and demented persons. “The truth is that the verdict of the Justice Mohammed Ambrusa-led Tribunal was very much in order and consistent with the facts presented before it by APC and other bodies that participated in that election. We, therefore, wish to appeal to the Tribunal to ignore the ranting and insults being thrown at it by the drowning PDP and her misguided actors,” Rivers APC said.

The party declared that Wike is aware that in a free and fair election in Rivers State, the APC gubernatorial candidate, Dr Dakuku Peterside, will beat him so mercilessly that he will lose his deposit. “If Wike and PDP are convinced that they truly won any election in Rivers State, we challenge them not to appeal the Tribunal judgement and let the people of Rivers State decide their in a free and fair election,” the State APC said in the statement.

Read Time:54 Second

We’ve been seeing many parenting fails on different social media sites. Though some are quite hilarious and forgivable, some crossed the line to the extent of abusing a child. Recently, a shocking video showing two men making a child smoke and drink alcohol has gone viral and sparked an outrage among social media viewers.

A concerned netizen named Daniel Tecu from Romania posted the footage on Facebook and asked people to identify the two adults in the video. The clip shows a Romanian guy sitting with a little boy on his lap and laughing while the other guy is filming, as both of them encourage the boy to smoke and drink beer.

The man holding the boy puts the cigarette in the child’s mouth to puff then lets the boy take a drink before making him puff again.

But it didn’t stop there, the man who seems to be the father puts a new cigarette on the boy’s mouth while the other man tries to light it.

A Mother Posted These Images Online For Fun, Spark Anger Among Netizens

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 17 Second

I know being a parent is a hard and tough job. I admit, I had a lot of fail moments while guiding my children but I never mistreated them by any means.

Whenever I see a child being abused, it really breaks my heart. As a parent, you want to give the best to your child not treat them like animals…

The caption says. “Bago ko pa lang alaga aso hahaha…lakas tawa ng anak ko sunud-sunuran nman…#dami kong tawa d2 grabe…”
Rough translation: “Meet my new pet puppy hahaha…my son is crazy obeys whatever I told him to do…just give me a big laugh…”

The photos went viral on Facebook and one Facebook page encouraging the netizens to help spread the image and punish the woman for treating her son like an animal and posting it on the web just for fun. Obviously the photo garnered negative feedbacks towards the behavior of the mother.

Having fun with your little ones is good, but let us not cross the line and do unpleasant stuff like this. We can have a bond with our kids in a nice and special way but treating your child like a dog is honestly a sore to the eye.

We don’t really know the story behind these photos, but for whatever reasons, what the mother did is certainly not right. We should have known the difference between “fun” and “abuse.”

18-Year-Old Girl Gets Brut*lly T0rtured For 8 Hours By Her Friends

Read Time:59 Second

Beware of who you become friends with. This is perhaps the lesson of a lifetime that Summer Gregg, 18 years old, learned the hard way recently.

Although she knew them and was good to them, Gregg was brutally tortured by Jay Blades, James Canning and Amy Gaines. The horrific incident took place at Blade’s house in Doncaster, South Yorkshire as a fulfillment of his birthday wish.

The heartless trio punched her in the face, beat her with a chain, and urinated on her. To make matters worse, they even filmed the attack.

Gregg eventually ended up being hospitalized for 3 days, gaining a lot of bruises, elbow fracture, and blood vessel bursting in both eyes.

At one point, she admitted about contemplating to jump from the eight floor (which was 50 ft above the ground) in order to escape her attackers who tortured her for 8 hours.

“I didn’t think I was going to make it out of the flat alive and thought jumping out of the window would either kill me or save me,” Gregg said. “At that point I began to think it was my only way out.”

14 Year Old Was Forced To Get Pregnant By Her Mother…Her reason…?

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 3 Second

We’ve all heard stories about good parents who are doing their very best to provide for the necessities of their children.

It is admirable how these fathers and mothers sacrificing to work really hard, even at the point of juggling several jobs at the same time, in order to sustain their families’ needs. For most of them, their children serve as their main source of inspiration. These parents are simply heroes in every sense of the word!

And then you hear about parents like this one – disgusting parents who push their kids to do bad things and ruin their future.

This recently-viral news tells us the story of a mother who wanted her teen daughter to get pregnant because she already wanted to have her own grandchild. That’s a pretty shocking reason right there!

According to the daughter, she was merely 14 years old when her mother started injecting sperm cells to her to achieve the purpose.

This is disturbing and sad at the same time. How could be a mother be so selfish and heartless?

Fortunately, the hospital staff later found out about the situation and immediately alerted the authorities. The mother is currently serving a 5-year term in jail.

Hindu cult believes a cup of cow urine heals cancer

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 45 Second

A growing cult of Hindu worshippers in India claim that drinking fresh cow urine will help cure them of all diseases – including cancer.

The Hindu believers regard the cow as a holy animal and say her urine has divine healing properties.

Jairam Singhal, 42, has been drinking cow pee for over a decade and was keen to testify to its health benefits.

‘I had diabetes, but ever since I have started drinking cow urine, my diabetes levels have been under control,’ Jairam said.

‘Someone told me drinking cow urine is good for health.

‘We have had cows here for over 12 years now, so first thing in the morning we take cow urine and drink it.’

In the north Indian city of Agra, dozens gather at the cow shelter of DD Singhal to have a fresh glass of cow urine.

‘Lots of people come here. And of late, the numbers have been rising. We all gather in the morning and drink fresh urine that Mother cow offers us,’ Singhal said.

‘Just a few years ago, there would hardly be anyone interested in taking cow urine from our shelter.

‘But today lots of people come to our cow shelter. There are cancer patients sometimes – they want to see the benefits of cow urine.’

Many say the recent increase in the number of people drinking cow urine can be attributed to campaigns run by spiritual leaders.

Followers of the cult claim cow urine can successfully be used to combat cancer, diabetes, tumours, tuberculosis, stomach problems and much more.

They also claim that drinking cow pee is the only effective solution for treating baldness.

‘Only two things are pure in this universe, in this world. One is the water from the Holy Ganges river and the other is urine from mother holy cow,’ Ramesh Gupta, a Hindu priest, said.

‘Cow urine has been mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures. No one can doubt the good effects it has on the human body. It is a divine gift from God.’

Followers like Gupta, however, insist that urine from every cow cannot be beneficial.

‘The cow, whose urine one has to drink, should be a virgin – she must not have delivered a calf. Also, the urine is to be collected just before sunrise – that urine has the best effect,’ he said.

However, there are people who oppose the claims made by preachers.

‘People keep saying all kinds of things about cow urine, but we don’t mind. People don’t know what this is. They have never experienced the taste of cow urine or its effects, so how can they judge it,’ Singhal said.

‘It is just a matter of time before people realise the utility of cow urine.’

He is now eyeing to cash in on the growing trend and has plans to start manufacturing cow urine products on a commercial scale.

‘We can manufacture eye drops, medicines for stomach ailments, toothpaste, bathing soaps, herbal powdered medicine, among other things, from cow urine,’ he said.

‘Many cow shelters are manufacturing these products. There is a lot of demand for these products. They have good sales.’

South Africa: protests: Zuma freezes tuition fees amid protests

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 11 Second

South African President Jacob Zuma has ruled out any increases in university tuition fees for next year after more than a week of protests by students.

They have been the biggest student protests to hit the country since apartheid ended in 1994.

The students had rejected an earlier government offer to cap increases at 6%, down from the 10% to 12% proposed by the management of universities.

Mr Zuma announced the move as students gathered by his office in the capital.

Before he spoke in a TV address, police had been using stun grenades and water cannon to stop a group of students breaking into the Union Buildings, the seat of government in Pretoria.

Before he spoke in a TV address, police had been using stun grenades and water cannon to stop a group of students breaking into the Union Buildings, the seat of government in Pretoria.

The demonstrations have closed some of the country’s top universities.

“We agreed that there will be a zero increase of university fees in 2016,” Mr Zuma said after meeting university officials and student representatives.

“In the long term, there is a package of issues that was raised at the meeting that needs to be followed up – these include free education, institutional autonomy [and] racism.”

There were chaotic scenes at the Union Buildings following the president’s speech, with some students angry that Mr Zuma had chosen to make the address on national TV, rather than come out to speak to them directly.

Pictures on social media showed police cars that had been damaged and one which was overturned.

It is unclear how the freeze on South African university fees will be funded, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, Max Price, told the BBC after attending meeting with the president.

The government said it did not know how much they would pay or where the money would come from, he added.

Local media reported that police fired rubber bullets to drive protesters away from the grounds around the president’s office.

During the protests, universities said they needed to increase fees to maintain standards, a they had been hit by a fall by in government subsidies.

Correspondents say the protests have shown the growing disillusionment with the governing African National Congress (ANC), which took power after minority rule ended in 1994, over high levels of poverty, unemployment and corruption in government.

Many black students say they come from poor families, and the fee increases would rob them of the opportunity to continue studying.

Financially better-off white students have also joined in, mainly to show solidarity with the black students.
