A bride's quick decision has earned her the title of a hero after she left her wedding to save her family involved in a car crash.

29-yr-old Sarah Ray, a paramedic from Clarksville, Tennessee rushed to the site of the accident one hour after her October 3 wedding to ensure none of her loved ones were injured or hurt in the crash.

Ray's father and grandparents were involved in the accident.

The bride's grandmother had to be hospitalised and her father sustained minor injuries but it looked like everyone was going to be fine in the end.

"There are a lot of people that are using the word "hero,"" Ray told ABC News.

"I don’t think what we did was heroic. It's just anything that any first-responder would have done."

"We had stopped at accidents before and in regular clothes. It just so happened that this time, I was in a wedding dress," she added.

Ray's father and grandparents were driving to the newlyweds wedding reception when the crash occurred. A car had run a red light and crashed into her family's vehicle.

Photos of the bride rushing to the crash site in her wedding dress were taken by her mother.

"I think the photo is great"

"It definitely makes for a memorable wedding. I hate that the actual accident had to happen, but everyone is going to be OK, so we can kind of laugh about it [the photo] now," said Ray who married a paramedic, Paul.

The couple made their way to the reception after making sure everyone was alright.

Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

A 27-year-old unemployed man, Larry Atipko, on Tuesday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defiling eight-year-old daughter of his co-tenant.

A resident of No. 1, Tunji Adesayo St., Fagba in Iju area of Lagos, Atipko is facing a charge of child rape.

Prosecutor Rita Momah said the accused committed the offence on Sept. 27 at his residence.

Insp. Momah told the court that the accused, who lives in the same house with the mother of the minor, allegedly lured the child to his room and had a canal knowledge of her.

"The accused, who is a friend of the family, had on several occasions had canal knowledge of the eight-year-old.’’

The offence violates Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.

Atipko, however, pleaded not guilty.

In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs F.A. Adeeyo, ordered that the case file should be forwarded to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

She granted the accused bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Nov. 25 for the DPP's advice.

Uproar over fireman who set asylum shelter ablaze

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 37 Second

German politicians are expressing outrage over the case of a fireman who has admitted to setting an asylum shelter ablaze and been allowed to walk free pending charges.

No one was hurt in the arson attack in the small town of Altena south of Dortmund. Seven Syrians who had arrived the day before, including a pregnant woman, escaped injury after neighbours noticed the blaze and alerted them.

But some politicians say the case has cast an unfavourable light on how German authorities are responding to a rash of shelter burnings across the country.

Germany, a favoured destination for refugees fleeing war in the Middle East, expects a record 800,000 to a million asylum seekers to arrive in the country this year.

Many Germans have welcomed the influx, donating clothes, helping at shelters and even opening their homes to refugees.

But others are dead-set against Chancellor Angela Merkel's welcoming stance. German federal police have counted 26 arson attacks on refugee shelters in the first nine months of the year. The Amadeu Antonio Foundation, a group that campaigns against right-wing extremism, puts the number at 70.

Yet only one person, in the northern town of Luebeck, has been convicted of an arson attack on a shelter this year. That person was given two years' probation.

The Altena case has attracted attention in part because the 25-year-old man behind the attack was a local fireman.

Prosecutors say he has admitted to entering the house, climbing to the attic and dousing it with gasoline before lighting the fire. In explaining his actions, he said he was scared about refugees living in his neighbourhood.

An accomplice who acted as a look-out later turned himself in to police and told them of the fireman's role. Because of the fire, the refugees have been forced to leave the town.

Local prosecutor Bernd Maas told Reuters he had decided to charge the men with arson rather than attempted murder or a political hate-crime, which carry tougher penalties, because he didn't believe they had meant to hurt anyone.

"They certainly had xenophobic motives but since they are not part of the right-wing extremist scene, there was no reason to treat this as a politically motivated case," Maas said.

"They didn't want to kill anyone and the suspect in his capacity as a firefighter was aware that setting fire to the attic would not hurt anybody."

A number of politicians have condemned that approach, saying it could set a dangerous precedent.

Dirk Wiese, a member of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) who sits in the German parliament in Berlin, called the prosecutor's assessment unacceptable.

"The offender shared a number of posts from populist right-wing websites on his Facebook page. Two clicks online would have been sufficient to determine his political motives," Wiese said.

Omid Nouripour, a lawmaker from the Greens party, called the prosecutor's decision "absurd" and said there was no doubt in his mind that the attack had been politically motivated.

NIGERIA: Dickson reveals true cause of ex-governor’s death

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson has spoken out on the circumstances which led to the death of former governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

Dickson said that Alamieyeseigha lost his life because he was harassed and forced to abandon the medical treatment which he was undergoing abroad.

The governor reportedly made the comments during a broadcast on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, according to Premium Times.

“To us as a people at this trying time, this sad incident should serve to unite us and to rededicate ourselves to the ideals that he stood for,” Dickson said.

“We acknowledge the anger, disappointment and the sense of outrage felt by our people at home and in the diaspora, well-meaning Nigerians and others around the world for the way and manner he was harassed and forced to abandon his treatment abroad.

However, this is not a time for recriminations and divisions but rather a time for sober reflections. I therefore call for all and sundry, particularly the youths to remain calm and maintain the peace as we mourn our departed leader,” he added.

Dickson also postponed the launch of his re-election campaign, which had been scheduled to hold on Saturday, October 17, in Alamieyeseigha’s honour.

The state government had earlier declared a seven-day mourning period for the former governor.

Alamieyeseigha died on October 10 at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt, River State.

NIGERIA: ‘We must close gap between rich, poor Nigerians’ – Ex-Gov. says

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 46 Second

Former governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has underscored the need for Nigeria to close the gap between the rich and the poor.

Fayemi, who gave the advice on Tuesday in Abuja while answering questions from senators in the course of his screening as a ministerial nominee, said it was unfortunate that no fewer than 110 million Nigerians lived below the poverty line on two dollars per day.

"Poverty is clearly deep in our country. If you look at our manifesto, we put it at a figure of about 110 million Nigerians who live below the two dollar per day margin in our country.

"It is not really poverty, it is inequality. You cannot have progress in any country, where one per cent of the population controls 80 per cent of the resources.

"The second issue to tackle, which I believe our government is taking head long is corruption.

"The amount of leakages in the system in our country is unacceptable and we need to do something fundamental about it.

"Leadership by example would have to be where to start. We need to reduce significantly the recurrent expenditure in our country.

"We also need to ensure that crime is linked to sanctions so that impunity will not continue to drive the country deeper and deeper into poverty.’’

He also spoke of the need to diversify the nation’s economy in addition to plugging all leakages from the economy.

The former governor also made a case for the creation of adequate job opportunities.

Fayemi spoke about his predecessor’s monetary obligations to banks, contractors, and individuals, which he had to settle.

"I met obligations in excess of 30 billion naira to banks, to contractors, to a range of people that government owed; and I took it in my stride.

"Completed virtually all the projects started by the Oni administration; paid off the bulk of the outstanding obligations to contractors and then we moved on.

"As governor, I borrowed; but it is not in the range of what has been bandied.”

Government rolls out birth registrations by mobile phone

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 32 Second

Tanzania has launched a nationwide drive to help parents register their children's births by mobile phone so the government can better plan health, education and other public services.

The country has one of the lowest rates of birth registration in eastern and southern Africa. Some 80 percent of Tanzanians – and more than nine in 10 under-fives – do not have birth certificates, according to the 2012 census.

Child's rights campaigners say ensuring every child's birth is registered is key to safeguarding basic rights and access to healthcare, education and justice. Birth registration also helps protect children from exploitation including child labour, child marriage, trafficking and early recruitment into armed forces.

Last month world leaders agreed to ensure universal birth registration under ambitious new global development goals (SDGs).

Most parents in rural areas of Tanzania do not register their children because of the steep cost, long distances to registry offices, cumbersome process and lack of awareness of the benefits.

Parents have to pay 3,500 Tanzanian shillings ($1.6) if they request a birth certificate within 90 days of a child's birth, or 4,000 shillings afterwards, as well as travel costs – a high price in a country where many rural people live on less than $1 a day.

The new system being rolled out across the country over the next five years allows a health worker to send the baby's name, sex, date of birth and family details by phone to a central data base and a birth certificate is issued free of charge in days.

The initiative – already operating in 10 of the country's 26 regions – is run by the government registration agency RITA, UNICEF and telecommunications company Tigo.

RITA's acting head Emmy Hudson said the project had accelerated birth registration after years of stagnation.

The government expects to register about a million children under the age of five before the end of this year, and 90 percent of all newborns within the next five years.

Anna Mbelwa, who gave birth to a baby boy at Mbalizi hospital in the southern Mbeya region this month, said the initiative made a big difference.

"I was very impressed because it usually takes a long time to get a birth certificate," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "It was very inconvenient before since parents had to travel a long distance to the district registrar only to be told their children's files were missing."

Globally, around 290 million children do not possess a birth certificate, according to UNICEF. Without one, they can face problems later in life if they want to enrol in university, find employment, buy property, access justice or get a passport.

"I will make sure that all my children have their birth certificate, it is very important for their future," Mbelwa added. "At the hospital every delivering mother was quite eager to get a birth certificate, they certainly know its importance."

The mother of a deceased British jihadi has expressed her relief over the death of her son, saying that he cannot hurt anyone, anymore.

Thomas Evans, has told of how her 'shy and gentle boy' turned into the monster who 'murdered Christians and torched churches'.

She says she is glad he is dead and believes he is “burning in hell” for his crimes.

Evans left his home in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 2011 to fight alongside the al-Shabaab terror group in Somalia.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, his mother, Sally, 57, said:

"I respected his right to be a Muslim… but eventually he stopped respecting my right to be secular and repeatedly told his brother and I we were destined for hell unless we converted to Islam."

In a phone call with his worried mother, he told her that he had married a young girl who was '13 or 14' and did not speak English.
