The Senate in a united voice on Tuesday, 28th July, 2015, has passed a vote of confidence in the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki.

In a motion, which was moved by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the Senate warned security operatives to stop harassing members of the senate or their family members.

Anyanwu said “Considering the sustained interference in the internal affairs of the Senate by detractors and media propaganda against the Senate and senators by selfish politicians. The senate hereby resolved to pass a vote of confidence in the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki; the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; the entire senate leadership as presently constituted.”

The vote of confidence was moved by all the senators from both the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress.

This puts to rest the various squabbles in the hallowed chambers.

Read Time:36 Second

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to visit The Republic of Benin on Saturday, August 1 for talks on how to combat terrorist sect, Boko Haram.

Buhari will meet with Benin counterpart, Boni Yayi after a similar visit to Cameroon on Wednesday, July 29, 2015.

According to a statement by the Nigerian president’s media aide, Femi Adesina, the trip will round-off Buhari’s diplomatic shuttles to neighbouring countries to strengthen regional cooperation against terrorism and make it much harder for Boko Haram to operate across national boundaries.

Yayi had visited Abuja, along with the leaders of Chad and Niger, after Buhari’s inauguration for a security summit on the creation of a multinational force against the sect.

President in Ethiopia on Africa tour to boost security, other ties

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 19 Second

Barack Obama met the Ethiopian prime minister on Monday on the first visit by a serving U.S. president to a nation with one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa but which has often been criticised for its rights record.

Talks with Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn are expected focus on security and the threat of the Islamist militant group al Shabaab in Somalia. Obama, who arrived from Kenya on Sunday, also wants to boost business ties with Africa.

Ethiopia's ruling party, in power for quarter of a century, has turned the once famine-stricken economy around, but opponents say it has been at the expense of political freedoms. The opposition failed to secure a single seat in a May parliamentary election.

On Obama's first stop in Kenya, his father's homeland, he urged Kenyans to deepen democracy, tackle corruption and end politics of exclusion based on gender or ethnicity. He also promised Kenya more security assistance.

"We are strongly committed to partnering with African countries to increase their capacity to address the immediate threats posed by terrorist organisations," the White House said in a statement on Monday.

Ethiopia contributes troops to an African Union peace keeping force battling al Shabaab in Somalia. The group has often launched attacks in Kenya, but diplomats say Ethiopia's state security apparatus has spared it similar assaults.

Obama holds talks with regional leaders about the conflict in South Sudan late on Monday. Warring factions have ignored pressure to end fighting, and talks may consider possible sanctions if an mid-August deadline is not met.

Obama, who many Africans claim as their son, is seeking to expand business links with the continent, where China overtook the United States as the biggest trade partner in 2009.

"Africa is on the move. Africa is one of the fastest growing regions in the world," Obama told a conference in Nairobi on Saturday that sought to encourage African entrepreneurs and match them with investors.

Ethiopia, brought to its knees by communist purges in the 1970s and famine in the 1980s, has won praise for pushing growth into double digits and spreading development with a range of rural health programmes and other initiatives across the nation.

But it has relied largely on state-led investment to drive growth, which economists say is squeezing out private business. It remains one of the world's biggest recipients of aid and is still among Africa's poorest nations per capita.

The government has often turned to China to help build new roads, railways and dams in its bid to expand the industrial base in the largely agrarian economy. The new metro line that snakes through Addis Ababa was built by a Chinese firm.

Read Time:59 Second

14 people have been confirmed dead after a chlorine gas explosion which occurred at the Plateau State Lamingo Water Board Treatment Plant on Saturday, July 25, 2015.

Many other residents of the area are said to be suffering from excess chlorine gas inhalation and are receiving treatment at OLA Hospital, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Plateau Specialist Hospital and the Air Force Hospital in the state.

The incident has been confirmed by the Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPPA) to the Plateau State Governor, Emmanuel Nanle.

“The contamination has been contained and does not affect the water, which has been supplied to public mains. Water from the public mains is safe for consumption and is not affected in anyway by the aerial contamination of chlorine from the explosion,” Nanle said.

“Government wishes to commiserate with the families of the victims of this industrial hazard and has taken immediate measures to address the issues of expired components of the treatment plant and to guard against future re-occurrence of this,” he added.

He also said that the state government was already taking measures to address the issue and prevent a future occurrence.

NIGERIA: ‘President’s US trip a waste,’ PDP says

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 18 Second

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent trip to the United States of America is a waste.

The opposition party also criticized Buhari over the recent maltreatment of former First Lady, Patience Jonathan at the Port Harcourt airport.

Mrs Jonathan had reportedly been refused entry into the VIP lounge of the airport during a visit to the state to bury a former aide.

The PDP’s comments were contained in a statement released by National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh on Sunday, July 26, 2015.

Metuh said:

“Now that the visit has come and gone, our fear is that nothing whatsoever has been learnt or gained. What we continue to receive as a nation have been embarrassing disagreements, accusations and counter-accusations, blames and denials on very important issues due to lack of tact and skill in the management of state matters by the APC-led administration.”

“It is disheartening that rather than secure any sort of tangible gain for the fight against terrorism, which has lost steam under the APC watch, with insurgents, who were pushed to the verge of surrender by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, now surging back and spreading into the country, we get nothing but exchanges and disagreements between the Presidency and their American hosts.”

“This is not only embarrassing but also a worrisome indication of crass ineptitude in the handling of international affairs on the part of the present administration.”

Buhari was in the US from July 20 to July 23.

NIGERIA: ‘We called for EFCC probe,’ Kwara PDP says

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 50 Second

The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that it is behind the ongoing probe of former First Lady, Toyin Saraki by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC invited Mrs Saraki, whose husband, Bukola is now the Senate President, to appear before it on July 28, 2015, to answer questions on some funds traced to companies she has interests in.

The statement reads:

"It has become imperative to inform the members of the public that we have every reasons to believe that a petition recently submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kwara state chapter, is largely responsible for the invitation and eventual criminal prosecution of the former Kwara First Lady and wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Saraki.”

“It will be recalled that our party had sometime early this year discreetly submitted a petition to the EFCC detailing how certain individuals in high places under the past administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki milked the state dry and left the people more impoverished than they met them.”

“In the said petition, we carefully chronicled how state officials, including former First Lady, Toyin Saraki; former Special Adviser to the Governor on MDGs, Mr. Ope Saraki; Personal Assistant (PA) to ex-Governor Bukola Saraki, one Mr. Abdul Adama from Kogi state; a former Commissioner for Information, Mr. Tunji Morounfoye, all working in a ring, got enmeshed in a cesspool of corruption unprecedented in the history of Kwara state or any other state of the federal for that matter!”

“Although, we believe that the arrest and prosecution of Mrs. Toyin Saraki is long overdue, we nevertheless take solace under the fact that the long arm of the law seems to have finally caught up with her and her cronies.”

“We are particularly delighted that our painstaking efforts at chronicling the monumental heist that defined the eight years, almost uneventful rule of former Governor Bukola Saraki in Kwara, has not gone unnoticed.”

“We therefore commend the EFCC for its resourcefulness and painstakingness. We pledge our cooperation with the EFCC and all other relevant anti-graft agencies to ensure that all those who knowingly looted our collective patrimony, but now walking the streets of Kwara free with their ill-gotten wealth, do not go unpunished. “

“We urge the anti-graft agency not to buckle in to pressure or blackmail that is already being mounted by political jobbers over Mrs. Saraki’s invitation by the EFCC. Instead of sponsoring paid activist-for-hire to stampede the EFCC out of the prosecution, one would have thought that the most moral thing for Toyin Saraki and her handlers to do now is to allow the law to take its course.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, we reiterate that the offences Mrs. Saraki is being accused of are criminal in nature and such offences are not known to be statute-barred. Therefore, the fact that it took over five years after Mrs. Saraki left office as Kwara First Lady before she is eventually brought before the law does not matter.”
Senator Joseph Waku had earlier accused All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Bola Tinubu of being behind the probe due to the party’s falling out with her husband.

NIGERIA: ‘Probe Amaechi if you’re sincere,’ Governor tells Buhari

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to show sincerity in his fight against corruption by probing former state governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

Wike also warned Buhari that appointing Amaechi into public office would be an endorsement of corruption.

The governor made the comments via a statement released by his media aide, Opunabo Inko-Tariah on Sunday, July 26, 2015.

It reads:

“If Buhari is sincere in his fight against corruption, let him probe the Amaechi’s government and he will discover that there cannot be a government official that is more corrupt than Amaechi.”

“From the genesis to revelation of his government, Amaechi’s fiscal recklessness and dictatorial policies and approaches are responsible for the financial woes of the state that should ordinarily be buoyant. A man like Amaechi must not be allowed to flaunt the fruits of his crime with impunity.”

“The appointment of Amaechi by Buhari will be an endorsement of corruption by Buhari. If there are no skeletons in his cupboard, why try to frustrate the Hon Justice Omereji’s commission of inquiry?”

“It is ironical that the same man who sealed the judiciary for close to two years and turned lawyers into taxi drivers and artisans will now have the gumption to approach the same courts he desecrated for justice.”

“If his successor had followed his footsteps, which court would he have approached to seek redress? How will he appear before those he almost turned into beggars?”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state had earlier also called on Buhari to probe Amaechi’s administration.

Adding that “At the end of the day, it is not acceptable where 14 to 15 states cannot pay salaries. The good news is that the president is standing by us and there is always a time lag between when you conceptualise and when you implement.”

He said that “For now, no government has got one naira under the bailout arrangement.”

Over 50 killed in Cameroon, Nigeria as Buhari warns US over Boko Haram

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 51 Second

Suspected Boko Haram attacks left more than 50 people dead on Wednesday, after Nigeria’s president warned the United States that its policy was hitting the fight against Boko Haram.

Twin suicide attacks in Maroua, northern Cameroon, killed at least 11, while some 42 lost their lives in a series of blasts at two bus stations in Gombe, northeast Nigeria.

The latest atrocities came after Boko Haram released a new video on Twitter, maintaining they were not defeated and vowing: “We will be coming from where you never expected, stronger than before.”

A new, five-nation force — from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin — is due to deploy by July 30 to take on the Islamic State Group-allied militants, whose six-year insurgency has left at least 15,000 dead and increasingly threatened regional security.

– Young girl bombers –

The attack in Cameroon saw two girls aged “under 15″ bomb the central market in Maroua, as well as the adjoining Hausa neighbourhood, said regional governor Midjiyawa Bakari.

A source close to local authorities said “two girls, who were begging, blew themselves up” at about 3:00 pm (1400 GMT), causing “total panic” and leaving gruesome scenes of mutilated bodies and flesh, according to one journalist.

President Paul Biya’s office said 11 people were killed and 32 wounded, condemning the attacks against innocent civilians as “cowardly and despicable”.

Biya called on Cameroonians to be vigilant, with the attacks the second this month.

On July 12, two female suicide bombers wearing the full Islamic veil blew themselves up in Fotokol, on the border with Nigeria, killing 10 civilians and a soldier from neighbouring Chad.

Regional authorities have since banned the use of full-face veils.

– Bus station blasts –

In Gombe city, blasts ripped through the Dadin Kowa bus station at about 7:30 pm (1830 GMT) and the Dukku terminus about 20 minutes later. Witnesses reported hearing two blasts at both sites.

Lack of electricity in the area made it impossible to say whether they were suicide attacks or homemade bombs left at the scenes.

“So far we have recovered 12 dead bodies from the blast scene,” said one rescue worker at the first site, who asked not to be identified. “The bodies are badly mutilated and we have several people injured.”

Gombe state police spokesman Fwaje Attajiri confirmed the first blast but did not give a death toll.

He had no details about the second explosion but one trader, whose shop is near the Dukku bus station, said: “There were two explosions. They happened after I had closed my shop for the day.

“I and others who were around came back and began pulling out bodies. I counted up to 30 dead bodies. I became sick and left.”

Last Thursday, 49 people were killed in a bomb attack on a market in Gombe city.

– Unwitting help –

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari came to power on May 29 vowing to crush the insurgency but since then more than 750 people have been killed, according to an AFP count.

Buhari, on his first trip to Washington as president, on Wednesday warned that a US refusal to arm his troops because of “so-called human rights violations” only helped Boko Haram.

He had been hoping for greater military assistance on the trip but indicated he would come home empty-handed because of a US law that prohibits sending weapons to countries that fail to tackle rights abuses.

“Regrettably, the blanket application of the Leahy Law by the United States on the grounds of unproven allegations of human rights violations levelled against our forces has denied us access to appropriate strategic weapons to prosecute the war,” he told an audience of policy makers, activists and academics.

Nigerian forces had been left “largely impotent” in the face of Boko Haram’s campaign of kidnapping and bombings, he added.

“They do not possess the appropriate weapons and technology which we could have had if the so-called human rights violations had not been an obstacle,” he said.

“Unwittingly, and I dare say unintentionally, the application of the Leahy Law Amendment by the United States government has aided and abetted the Boko Haram terrorists.”

He appealed to both the White House and the US Congress to find a way around the law and to supply his troops with high-tech weapons under a deal “with minimal strings”.
